"One night a woman falls ill and, within a few days, dies. With her, her husband loses everything that had bound him to his middle class way of life. He gives up his job as a senior clerk in a tobacco wholesale company, sells his house and leaves Washington D.C. He could take up his former profession again. Not that of a bookkeeper or an insurance salesman, but of a professional gambler. However the man, aged 43, makes a very different decision. He moves to New York City, finds a room in a small hotel, and begins to write.
