Bank of America finally did something cool! Have you guys deposited checks or cash in the new Bank of America machines yet?

It is so awesome![More:] No envelope, no deposit slip, just sign the check and shove it in.
Then the machine scans it and shows you a mini-version and reads the amount it is for.
I was so impressed that it could read my roommate's writing!

I want to deposit everything. I think I'll start writing myself checks.
I can't wait for my stimulus check!
oops! can I have a "more" thingy?

Hee. Wells Fargo has similar ATMs. They are very cool!

I've never deposited a check in an ATM. I'm always paranoid it will get jammed in the slot or shredded into cole slaw, or something. But that does sound pretty cool.

(It's too bad Diebold won't be using this awesome new technology in some of the other machines they manufacture.)

My local BofA still has the old amber screen ATM from 1992 when the bank opened as a NationsBank. It is old school but still gets the job done with its dot matrix recepits. The Wells Fargo machines here have a new interface and can do stuff like remember your preferences but still requires an envelope for deposits.

I've only seen the new fangled BofA ATMs when I was in California. And there I was only taking $ out.

I can't remember the last time I deposited an actual paper check. It all automatic these days.

There's only a few in NY that do it, but yeah, it's pretty great when I find one.

Atom Eyes - that happened to me once - the envelope slipped under the grabber thingies and the guys had to go into the machine to get it. I'm extra careful about it now.

One thing that annoys me about ATMs is why they have a $.00 area for withdrawals when they know damn well you can't withdrawal sixty dollar and twenty-six cents.

My guess is that this is because people are physically unable to stop themselves from punching 4-0-0-0 when they mean forty dollars; we're too well conditioned by calculators and adding machines and phones and other single-digit-entry devices. If they prefilled the cents spaces, they'd probably have tons of cancelled transactions where people entered "4000.00" by accident, and all sorts of annoying customer-service interactions.

Also, I wish I could favorite Atom Eyes' comment about Diebold. Seriously.

I totally agree on the Diebold thing.
You also get a chance to confirm the amount before you deposit itnto your account, which would be perfect for those hanging chad/confused Floridians.

I've been depositing cheques like this since 1996 (Nationwide building society, UK). Love it.

No, I don't want Espanol. I didn't want it the last 500 times I used your ATM. How hard is it to code a flag for this into the card itself?

I once hit 'Yes' for the Espanol option, just because I was feeling cocky. About three screens into the transaction, I panicked and started feverishly smashing 'Aborto' (or whatever) when I realized how shamefully little I had actually retained from two years of high school Spanish.

Many, many moons ago, Marine Midland bank (now HSBC) just plain forgot to empty the ATM. A week and a half later, I tried to withdraw on my paycheck, but they didn't even see the deposit as pending or anything. After much wailing and gnashing of teeth (very publicly in the branch office, I might add), they went over to the ATM and pulled my sealed, machine dated envelope out with a whole bunch of other people's stuff. Oops. I closed my account right then and there and never looked back. They tried to put a hold on my paycheck and I said they already had it for a week and a half which is longer than they would hold a local check for. I demanded my money (again, very loudly in the bank branch, explaining how utterly imcompetent they were to them and all the customers who happened to be there) and got it.

The ATM at the IBM credit union down the street (now called something else) has an ATM that will let you get change. You can ask for $43.63 and that is what you get.

The atms in my small college down could give you exact change. My old roommate used to ask for 4.75 whenever he needed to do laundry, because the laundry change machine didn't take $5 bills, and this got him the most amount of quater potential.
