Strange, brilliant and ridiculous... Man, I liked me some Southland Tales.[More:]

I felt like its flaws were only flaws because it was so out there. Points of note, other than the scene linked above:

-The soundtrack's integration is spectacular, and that arrangement of the National Anthem setting up the mood of the final scenes... wow.

-Every character actor ever. (Well, maybe not really. But holy balls...)

-"Scientists are saying the future is going to be far more futuristic than they originally predicted." I dunno, but that sums up my feelings on the visuals.

-That's all I can write now...
Intriguing video. Thanks.

And now I need a beer. Thank god I have some Erdinger Weissbräu in the fridge! Mellow sunday evening.

I'll stand by my earlier estimation

It's a farce; I felt no need to "care" about the characters partly because of that. (And the dialogue is bizarre, but I think I'm endeared to it now.) I was more interested in this batshitinsane but incredibly detailed scenario Kelly had plotted out and the absolutely surreal path through it. I dunno. I understand why it's been called a mess, but it's intricately calculated so I'm not sure I agree, at least with that terminology...

It's just really, really weird. There's nothing I can say to that. Some people love it, some people hate it. And that's fine.

I'm not saying the last third of the movie would suddenly make you love it or that you should even try it, danf, but that final act really is where things pull together. I felt a major "wtf" regarding the plot up until then, but as the loose and fairly confusing plot spirals begin to intertwine more tightly, it becomes clearer what we're leading to and what's driving everything.
