AskMecha: Bangs or no bangs? I've been longing for bangs for a while now, but dare I do the cut? I have thin hair and live in a windy city where the perfect bangs can just get blown away to rubbish whisps that stick right up (which is why I grew them out in the first place). Hmm.

The bangs I'm missing.

(also yes I miss being fire engine red too but that color just won't stick on my current hair so I'm going light orange)

I like bangs myself.

I love bangs. It's the on me bit that is a bit scary. Will I be too old for the bang-look (considering how much wax I have to weight it down with)? Is it tres unfashionable right now? Should I just say feck it and crop five dead centimetres off my long hair and do a bob and bangs deal? aaah... Dare I?

I need a change. Options welcome.

Ah I can see this issue is more complex than originally thought.

Will I be too old for the bang-look?

There's an age issue with bangs? Bugger that.

Is it tres unfashionable right now?

Pfft better to go with what suits you than fashion.

5 cms? Sure - won't take long to grow back if you want it longer and it's always refreshing to have a decent cut.

Exactly! Do what makes ya happy. And like gomi says, it will grow.

allright, this is giving me a needed push to the bang direction. My hair is extremely slow growing though, which is why I'm so wary. It takes more than a year to grow out bangs. TRES COMMITMENT! :))

Bangs make you look younger, but they aren't reserved for children or anything! Hair is hair.

(I had to get bangs for a show last year and I was sooooooo resistant since my face is round. But I love them! I had varying lengths over the year, but I have found it flattering in most cases!)

SOLD! Whooooo! (I've been fretting about looking old lately. It's the old man, I'm all pale and pasty thing when spring comes along feeling I guess, just tenfold as I am *gasp* getting older and still think I'm 22)

I say go for it. Hair grows. I can't see the picture you linked. I know I've seen gorgeous pics of you before. Bangs depend on the forehead. Is your forehead long, short, or somewhere in between? My forehead is very short. I wore bangs for years but got smart and grew it out. So much better! But, I see a lot of people that would benefit from bangs. And they do make you look younger. Goldie Hawn knows that trick!

I guess my forehead is fairly long. I have that proportion right, forehead same as nose and my nose isn't exactly short. Hehehe. Perhaps it will distract from my tiny jaw? ;)

Screw talking about it, I'm booking a hairdressers appointment. It can only go badly. (I haven't found a hairdresser here that does my hair right since I moved so I've never been happy with a cut anyway)
Thanks!

dabtich, I saw some pics of you on Flickr. I think you would look great with bangs, seriously. You hair looks good now, too. Good luck with whatever you decide. I know it can be a hard decision.

On preview, have fun, dabitch!

Yes, do it. Then pix! Before and afters. I also have fine hair, and I usually have bangs... long, short, straggly, mostly straggly, sticking up, sticking out, whatever.

Long bangs almost always look good. If it didn't bug me so much to have hair in my face, i'd do it.

dabitch, I've been mulling over the same question for awhile now. The last time I had bangs was probably 1991, which explains my fear. To me, bangs equal huge teased messes of insanity. I can't even wrap my head around how to wear them differently, or fashionably, or to look like a normal person with them.

But you, I sense, will be able to pull it off. (Especially as you're not one of those half-Asian girls always mistaken for a child -- bangs would make me look like I was about five.)

I go through that very question every couple of years, I cut bangs, like them for months then decide "to grow them out" only when they get grown out I want them back. I just cut mine back last week. Of course I had to be undecided for a few months before. Should I? Shouldn't I? Go for it, you know you loved them when you had them before its just the leap thats scary.

I can't stand having straight bangs on myself - too many associations of when I was a dorky little goody-two-shoes. But go you for doing them, you'll look awesome!

(oh and maybe stock up on cute hair clips if the hairdresser mucks them up :)

It's just hair - have fun!

Me, I have a round face but I look better with bangs than without. Maybe because I have a fairly long forehead. It's definitely longer than my nose, which is something I've never heard of.

I DID IT! I HAVE BANGS!

(and wow, feels odd. It rained while I walked home so pics later.)

Hehe, oooooooops sorry. I kind of forgot to get my picture taken, so here's some rubbish self-posed camera pics via my dirty mirror in my messy bedroom. I'm tres pleased with my bangs. :)

I have to wear a TON of hairspray on windy days (read every day) here tho. It's like a bang-helmet. hehehee.

It's my Kakelugn (tile fireplace? I have no idea how to translate that) - you can tell by it being a) white b) round and c) having flower shapes (wild daffodil) in the tile that my house (or the fireplace at least) is from the early 1900's and a working class building. Also, hello - Jugend - this means flowers and simplicity everywhere.

See, fancier houses had them much earlier on and more commonly in squares or colonn shapes richly decorated or in dark colors like greens and browns for the mens room. Plain white round ones are for the maids in the rich peoples quarters and it wasn't really until the late 1800's early 1900's that these became every mans item, and when that happened the flower shaping stuff appeared.

Of course, as trendy as Swedes are peopele have done silly things like ripped these things out, cemented them shut (aargh!), painted them (double argh!) or simply replaced them with modern fireplaces - which doesn't work with the skinny smoke-hole these things use so that's a recipe for a really smoky room. I'm a big fan of these and very happy that I found an apartment with one, even though my danish SO wasn't too impressed at the start (now he really digs it though)
On the upside, this type of fireplace now has a revival and Annika Svensson does modern kakelugnar that look a bit like some Gaudi might do.

In the 1860's theree was a trend in a combo of "kakelugn" and the classic iron stove, known as Besparingsspisar (saving ovens). The idea was that you'd save the heat of the oven in the tile fireplace.

/ end history lesson on tile ovens. or whatever we shall call them in english.

By the way, that second links shows only ovens for sale - I promise you that you'd never get bored with one of these babies making your room look all purdy all the time. :)

Also, they're the best thing ever for people like me who hate cold winters, and you can air out your room by simply lighting a candle in it - it pulls the air out faster than opening the window. ;)
