What time do you get up in the morning? A friend of mine was surprised to hear that I wake up at 6AM on weekdays. [More:]

What time do you wake up/get out of bed in the morning? For comparison's sake, what time do you have to be out of the house? And what do you do with your morning between rising/shining and heading out into the world?
I wake up at 5:30. I shower, read email, feed the cat, gather food for the day, get dressed and usually get out of the house between 6:30 and 6:45. Because good god, it is impossible to do work in my office once the other people arrive and start shouting and amusing themselves all day.

Usually 7. Then really wake up at 7:30.
Fire up NPR, AskMe, NYT while coffee brews. Bliss. Shower at 8. Quick bite at 8:20.

Leave for work at 8:30 or so.

I don't have to be at work at any particular time but I'd like to get there around 8:40 so I feel like I have the whole day to be productive. And, I don't feel guilty when I leave at 4 to go play.

If I'm working, my alarm usually goes at 7 and I haul my sorry ass out of bed around 7:30 (unless it's one of those disturbing mornings when I'm wide awake at 6 or something crazy like that), make tea, visit this home in the ether, generally fart around until 8:30 raising my caffeine and nicotine to acceptable levels, then madly run around filling water bottles and making my morning smoothie (solid food in the morning is teh yuck) and packing my lunch and getting dressed so I can be ready to go at 9.

If not, I'm still usually up by 9, but the internetting and general farting around takes at least 2 hours instead of one.

On days I work at the office, get up at 8:40 to leave the house at 9:15 to get to the office at 10.
On days I work at home, get up at 10 to start work at 10.

funny thing elizard. I feel the same way. I can't really eat solids till I down many cups of coffee and feel fully awake (around 10 am or so).

For my last job, I got up at 6 and left for work sometime before 8:30. I need a solid hour of drinking coffee and being left alone before I can think or be civil. My sister is the same way, and her children have learned to be non-obtrusive during that first hour around both of us. I can remember my niece at the age of four or so solemnly telling me "You are like Mama, don't talk to you until you have had two cups of coffee!" hehe.

Now that I am job-hunting, I get up at 8 and start being mostly productive around 9:30.

I set my alarm for 7am.

When it goes off, I reset it for 7:45am. Then at 7:45, I start going into 15 minute increments: 8:00, 8:15, 8:30, 8:45. Usually I finally get up* at 8:30 or 8:45 and make it to work about an hour later. Just in time to be 30 to 45 minutes late. Not that 9:00 is my 'official' start time, but that seems to be when everyone else gets there.

This is Tuesday through Friday. On Mondays we have a group meeting at 8:30am, and I've only slept through one of those in the last six months.

*Note: When I say 'get up', I mean for the final time. My alarm is across the room, so I do physically get up each time I reset it.

Also, one of my co-workers shows up at like 6:45 or 7:00 every morning. A young guy. He claims that he's just naturally a morning person. I hate his guts.

I get up at 6:40, do 20 minutes of cardio, shower, make lunch (if it's my turn), eat breakfast, and watch some Sportscenter. I leave the house between 8:10 and 8:20, and get to work between 8:30 and 8:45.

I'd like more time in the morning to wake up and exercise, as well as sit around doing my own thing, but I already get not enough sleep.

On weekdays I wake up around 7.30 and get up around 7.50. I'm out the door at 8.30 and at work by 9.20.

On weekends, I abide by the 8 hour rule (which isn't what you're supposed to do, I know, but it works for me) in that I need my 8 hours sleep, and if I haven't gotten to sleep until 2.30 then dammit, I'm not waking up until 10.30.

My alarm goes off at 6:17am (I always set alarms to "off" times); I usually get up around 6:30 and immediately take a shower.

I find that my life is much better if I can take 30-45min. in the morning to drink my coffee and hang out with the cat and screw around online, so that's what I do. (It's also when I feel most energetic, that hour or two right after I wake up, but I crash almost immediately after that, so I don't consider myself a morning person, really.)

I leave the house at 8am to be at work at 8:30, which is officially when my entire office starts its day.

The alarm goes off at 6:45; the canine alarm clocks have usually gone off about five minutes before that. On good mornings (like today, actually, huzzah!), I get out of bed without hitting the snooze button, let the dogs out, go to the bathroom, brush my teeth, wake up my son, put on my horrible overalls and boots, put the dogs in the car, drive 1/2 a mile to the river park and walk with the dogs offleash for 40 minutes. I need to get out the door before I wake up entirely and without thinking about it or it won't happen. Then I get back around 8:00 or a little before, son is already on the school bus and I have 45 minutes to have breakfast - always emergen-C, vitamins and coffee, usually toast, granola, soy milk - and smoke a cigarette and take a shower and space out and maybe read part of the New Yorker before I have to leave at about 9:00 to get myself to first the post office and then work by 9:15 or thereabouts. Theoretically I'm supposed to be at work by 9:00, but, oh well.

Then there are the mornings where either I hit the snooze button a couple times and/or my son misses the bus. We won't talk about those mornings.

On normal workdays, I get up at 7:25 or so. Put on water for tea, stretch a little, quick shower, get dressed, listen to a little music, read a little website, maybe have a bite to eat, and I'm out the door by 8:15 or 8:30.

On days off, and weekends, it pretty much depends on what happened the night before.

I always stay up too late and I really need a full eight hours, so I get up at the last possible minute. I'm lucky my office is flexible: you can show up any time between 7.00 and 9.00. My total commute (walking and bus) is half an hour.

I set my alarm for 7.15, and usually snooze two or three times, then stagger straight to the shower around 7.35/7.45. On a good day I'm out the door by 8.15, if I'm moving slow it's 8.25. Sleeping in on the weekends means at least 9.30, if not 11.30.

I'd like to be one of those people who gets up, farts around, makes tea, or (Jesus) exercises. I forget, though, that I spent almost four years of my life at a meditation school, getting up at 4.30 (yep, weekends too) to chant and meditate.

Two possible scenarios during the work week:
1 - up by 4:10, let the dog out, wake up, run and work out until 5:15, feed the animals, drink coffee, read paper, fiddle about (dishes, laundry), in the shower by 6:10, at work by 7.

2 - up at 5:10, everything above sans the workout.

Weekends, I usually awaken between 6 and 6:30, let the dog out, and then typically lie on the couch for an hour or so (and let my wife get some extra sleep), then back up to feed the animals, make coffee, grab the paper, and do weekend stuff.
posted by tr33hggr 09 April | 13:15
Ostensibly 6:00. That, anyway, is the time when I shut my alarm off and roll back over, waiting for the faintest sounds of the baby stirring in the next room. At that point, I either go get him up or jump in the shower so my wife has to get him. The decision is largely a matter of my mood. So really it's anywhere between 6:30 and 7:00.

Weekdays (school days) other than working days I wake up around 6:50. On days I work I get up at 4:30 or 5:00 depending on what time I have to open the doors (6am or 6:30). On workdays I get the coffee going and head to the shower. On weekends I wake up by 8 because my kids are up. I rarely have the opportunity to sleep in. I don't miss it like I used to.

The days I'm in the office I get up at 5.30am. On my work at home days and at weekends, I'm usually up by 7 unless I've had an exceptionally late night.

My alarm is set for 7:30 on weekdays. On weekends, I sleep until my husband wakes me up, because I will sleep endlessly otherwise.
Once awake on school days, I begin the ritual litany with my son, "Time to get up", "Do you know what time it is?" "Get your ass out of bed!". I drive him to school if he is late, then I come home and make weapons-grade coffee, and breakfast for my man (usually oatmeal with blueberries). Then I sit down on my couch (yeah, I work in my living room) and start my workday. I usually save Metachat as my treat after my first hour of work.
I am amazed at how early some of you get up. I only get up at 7:30 because I have to. I hate hate hate waking up to an alarm.

I switched to a CD of rainforest birds singing and chirping and doing bird things. It has improved my morning mood remarkably, though I did have a weird waking-dream this morning about trying to help a chick break out of its egg, then getting upset with myself because I knew I shouldn't be doing that because it would hurt the chick.

So there's that.

Specklet, I used to do the 'hit snooze for an hour then run around for 30 minutes cursing and tripping over my shoes' morning, until a former partner pointed out that since I wasn't actually getting any sleep during that hour I might as well use it to make my (and therefore his) mornings suck less. It takes me about 2 hours to become remotely human, so this time has become most valuable, even if it is spent frittering. I freely admit that exercising that early is waaay too much for me, but since my work is pretty physical I'm fine with that. I probably *should* do some yoga or something before heading off for that kind of work, but I don't. *shrugs*

On volleyball mornings (mwf) I get up at 5:15, get dressed, and have coffee at the gym (it's free and good). T - Th, get up at 6 or 6:15. Eat, make a latte, maybe fool around online or maybe not, walk to work starting at 7.

Weekends, I usually can't stay in bed past 8. So get up, make a latte, be online till wife gets up like an hour later.

I set my alarm for 6:45 and usually get out of bed within about ten minutes. Shower, get dressed. Make breakfast (usually toast, cheddar, grapefruit juice). Assemble lunch. Eat breakfast while reading AskMe or a book or the New Yorker. Think I'm ready to leave the house, then realize I have no shoes on, have to find socks, brush teeth, etc. I try to leave at 8:10, since my walk to work takes me 20 minutes. Work starts at 8:30, and it's not unheard of that coming in at 8:32 means I've already missed something.

I've gone through phases where I wake up around 5:30 to work out, but I can never sustain it. I like my sleep. On weekends, I'm elated if I manage to sleep in until 8:00.

Monday through Thursday, I have 3 alarms set on my phone. I get up at 730am, eat breakfast (currently eating a little mini coffeecake, 2 string cheses, washed down with coke and a bc pill) and fuck around on the internet until 8am, when alarm #2 goes off. I turn on the big lights in my room (as compared to my wee little desk lamp that I use most of the time to keep my room nice and cave-like) and actually get dressed, put on my makeup, and generally make myself look presentable. Alarm #3 goes off at 830 and I turn off the TV and go to work. (I have to be at work at 9. I get to work most days at 850, which is totes chill, because then I have 10 minutes before I have to check the queues.)

Friday and Saturday I sleep until around noon-ish or later, if my fucking mother doesn't wake me up.

On Sunday I do the same routine as Monday through Thursday, but it just gets shifted to be 930, 10, and 1030.

If I'm working out (usually 2 mornings a week) I get up at about 5. If I'm not working out, I get up around 6. I leave the house at about 10 minutes to 8 -- it's only 2 1/2 miles from home to where I work.

The only time I ever have to use an alarm is if I have a very early flight to catch. Otherwise, if I'm in bed by midnight and I haven't had too much to drink, I get up around 5:30 or 6. If either of those conditions aren't met, it's usually 7:30 or 8, but I've been known to haul myself out of bed and into work at three in the afternoon if I was out until dawn. Flexible work hours are awesome.

Alarm usually goes off around 6:45. I turn it off, and get out of bed around 7 - 7:20 am. This leaves me time to shower, eat some oats, get dressed and get to work at around 8 - 8:30ish. I do my caffeinating + farting around at my desk (till 9 or 9:30 am; if only my boss knew...)

I have very, very rarely been able to get out of bed before I absolutely have to.

Mister Baby usually starts babbling around 5AM. Sometimes 4. Most of the time, my husband is already up, so he grabs him and they have their male-bonding time while he gets ready for work. Around 6AM, they come get me out of bed and the mister leaves for wok. The baby gets the exersaucer and some PBS* while I try to catch a few more minutes sleep. That usually doesn't work. Once the girl comes down at 7, the day is in full swing.

*I know, letting my baby watch TV makes me a horrible mother constructed entirely of laziness and evil. But I have been bone f-ing tired for 6+ years now. I'll take any shortcut I can to eek out a few more minutes of sleep.

5:30 am - get up, brush teeth, dress (for gym), put in contacts, walk dog, feed dog
5:45 am - go to gym, do gym-like things
6:30 am - go home, shower, etc. eat breakfast if I have time, pack lunch.
7:35 am - leave for work
8:15 am - arrive at work (except for when CTA sucks, which is like every day, in which case I get to work at 8:30).
8:16 am - make oatmeal (if I didn't eat at home), get coffee, eat at desk while perusing the interwebs
8:45 am - start actual work.

misterkaz usually gets up while I'm at the gym, and putzes around for a very long time before he actually goes to work because it's the only way he can function in the morning. Much coffee is also required.

On weekends the dog lets us sleep in until about 7:30 or so. There are no schedules most weekends, which is why they are awesome. And why it sucks that last weekend and this weekend have been/will be spent on business trips. Boo.

My alarm goes at 5.45am (which is actually 5.35am because I set my alarm clock 10 minutes ahead to frighten myself out of bed - I'm not too bright at that hour). If I'm prepared to rush, I can sneak one snooze cycle, but I have to make coffee (and green tea for Her Indoors) shower, shave, get dressed, put in contacts and be heading out the door by 6.10 at the latest to catch the 6.29am train, which gets me to the city at 7.32am, then I walk 15 minutes to arrive at work at about 7.45am.

On Fridays, I can squeeze in a second snooze cycle, because it's casual dress day and it takes me less time to get dressed. On Mondays, I can't use the snooze cycle at all, because I need to get to the station a few minutes earlier to buy my weekly ticket (I usually arrive on the platform just as the train appears around the corner, so precise timing is important - I synchronise my watch to Queensland Rail time to facilitate this).

On weekends, my alarm goes at the same time, but I hit snooze a few times before dragging myself out of bed and getting ready to work on the house.

During work days (including Saturday for me): I'm up at 5, shower, dress, feed the cats, walk the dog, feed the dog, leave by 6, get to work a little before 7 so I can get coffee and a bagel and chat with friends. On my weekday off, I'll sleep 'till six during the school year, or sleep until I can't sleep anymore when the kids are off.
Sundays - sometimes the dog and cats are kind and let me sleep until 8, which always surprises the heck out of me!

does anyone else in this thread have to be at work BY 8.00 AM?

anyone?

that and on mornings when I have to conform to a plant operator's schedule, I have to be AT work by 7. And by AT work, I mean logged on, documents open, ready to start a session, not 'rolling in the door considering coffee'.

wow. I mean, I know the Front Range 8-4 normal workday isn't normal everywhere, but I thought office hours pretty much started at 8 these days. They did in Cincinnati.

fortunately both me and the mister are natural 5.30-6AM risers, and I'm one of those people who seems to naturally only need 6 hours of sleep a night (7 or 8 makes me groggy and sluggish). this seems to be natural for most athletes, as many of us tend to try to get a ride / workout in before the workday.

It depends on what work I'm doing. Typically, I am up between 10am and noon. Depending on what the dogs are doing when I wake up I either take them out immediately or sit in bed for a few minutes. After taking care of the dogs I turn on the computer to see what's going on with work.

Atypical days (if one of the comedians I work for is doing morning radio or tv) I am up at 4:30am.

What time do you get up in the morning?

6, same as you.

what time do you have to be out of the house?

This depends on what work I have for that day. Since I'm in-between jobs right now, I'm kinda flexible; left the house at 9:30 today to drop off my sis at her college.

And what do you do with your morning between rising/shining and heading out into the world?

Let's see: get up, head to the bathroom, wash, brush and flush, and then go downstairs to read the Quran for about half an hour, along with saying my morning prayers. After that, make my morning cup'o joe, and sit in front of the TV watching the morning News and reading the paper. Then, I've got to take out the trash and if there's anything that mom wants me to get from the market I have some errands to run. And finally, I finish it off by giving dad a good back massage, head press, and foot rub (the guy's over 65, and needs a little push to get his day started).

That's basically it. My morning from 6 to 7:30. Oh yeah--and then its breakfast, and a shower if I've got to go somewhere, or I usually stay in my pyjamas (bodily smell and all).

I get up at 8 or 7:45; the weekends are generally no exception (except when we've been up late - in that case, I might sleep until 9). I feed the cat, put the kettle on, turn on the computer. I make some tea and read the news on the internet. I watch my girlfriend get up; make another pot of tea, eat breakfast. Then I brush my teeth and head to the library (around 9 or 9:30).

Unless I have to go to an am meeting somewhere other than my office, then I time it according to when I have to leave to be there on time, and my hours are totally flexible so sometimes this might be like 10:30, 11:00.
