Is it too late to start asking about Bunnystock III? Or at least a name for it?→[More:]The best I could come up with in my undercaffeinated state is 'Zombie Bunny Army Are We.' I know you can do better.
We're probably supposed to be in Louisiana in mid June, for a month or so... so, maybe not a full-fledged bunnystock, but there might also be a chance for New Orleans meetup thingy. We might try to stay a couple of days in NYC, too - not sure.
The talk of a deep South meetup in the elizard-BOP-sittin-in-a-tree thread got me thinking about it...and I was actually just emailing BoringPostcards to float an idea by him, but I guess since this is here...
To my somewhat shame, my wife and I own a timeshare (long, boring story), the kind where we get a certain number of points to spend each year at various locations around the country. For a number of reasons we will have a hard time spending our points this year, which means we'd be spending a bunch of money on maintenance fees this year for no reason.
I was gonna suggest to BP that this place just west of Atlanta would be fun. Pools, lakes beaches and BP! We've got enough points to get a place that would sleep 8 for a week at this place. But there are also places in New England that would have similar space/time parameters.
These are nice, if sometimes old, resorts with full kitchens and whirpool tubs and such. If people are interested, I'd need get back to get back the maintenance fees to make it a win-win for my family. I figure it would work out to less than $50 per person per night. (If we fill to capacity, we could maybe also raise some $$ for a metachat.org donation)
The best thing about the timeshare, I think, from a mecha perspective is nobody would feel obligated to play "host". But, of course, no hard feelings if there is no interest or people feel it would be a bad idea for some other reason.
I love the timeshare idea. Atlanta is mighty convenient for me, but I'm flexible! I'm covering for my boss for a week in June and July that I will not be available for. Other than that, I'm open. I really hope not to buy a 300 dollar plane ticket and not use it this time!! :-)
We've had two East Coast Bunnystocks and just the one Vegas meetup out west.
There was talk of Burning Bunny some time ago. It would just figure that as soon as I go east the next big meetup would be in the west, especially since I was one of those in favour. :P
I'm coming in late from a long day and have to be somewhere in just a few minutes, but I just want to say YES BUNNYSTOCK-YES ATLANTA/SOUTHEAST OR NORTHEAST-YAY-I'M THERE!
I'd love to see a Bunnystock in NE, and am normally good at organizing such things, but I'm also swamped at work and that's why I've been reluctant to take on planning. However, I'd say that even if there's no New England bunnystock this year, it's likely to happen sometime in future. This is such a great place to visit and I'd love to help play host.
I am hoping to call a MeFi/MeCha meetup here on coastal Maine sometime in summer, date unknown, but I don't think it'll be a full-fledged bunnystock.
I love the timeshare idea and would try to make it if it got off the ground.
If we do the timeshare, I'd like to be able to attend at least the last day so that I can make sure things are ok before checkout, which means I'd like to be driving distance from DC. Atlanta works, New England works, New Orleans is really pushing it but it's New Orleans so I'd consider it, but anything further west wouldn't work for me.
Here's some possibilities of what my points could get:
Villa Rica, GA (Just west of Atlanta): 2 bedroom (sleeps up to 8), 1,240 sq feet for a week after Aug 17 OR 2 bedroom (sleeps up to 8), 1,100 sq feet for a week before Aug 17.
Newport, RI: 2 bedroom (sleeps up to 6), for 4-5 nights (incl Fri & Sat) OR 3 bedroom (sleeps up to 8), for 3 nights (incl Fri & Sat).
Old Town Alexandria (near DC): 2 bedroom (sleeps up to 8), 1,155 sq feet for 3 nights (incl Fri & Sat) OR for 4 -5 nights after Aug 17 OR 3 bedroom (sleeps up to 8), 1,400 sq feet for 4-5 nights after Aug 17 (would cost a little extra).
New Orleans, LA: 1 bedroom (sleeps up to 4), for a week.
There's other options: places near Asheville and Va Beach, which have both been done, and places like Atlantic City or other beaches which would only be 1 bedroom at most. And all of these are subject to availability of course.
I like the Georgia option because there's been a lot of (fun) just hanging around home base at previous bunnystocks (as opposed to a lot of going out and doing stuff) and Villa Rica seems to offer a lot on site. Also the idea of a week-long bunnystock where people kinda of arrive and leave as they can appeals to me. But Newport seems really cool and a long weekend is more traditional bunnystock. Alexandria is, of course, ideal for me (and there's extra space at my house) as well as centrally located.
Wow, Villa Rica is apparently really popular in the Summer. I called to check on availability and was only able to get a smaller 2 bedroom (sleeps 6) from Aug 30-Sept 6. That's Saturday to Saturday which kinda sucks that there would be no full weekend (and includes Labor Day which is both an advantage and disadvantage). I've never really had a problem getting the place I wanted when I wanted before, so that was a little surprising and disappointing. Sorry about that.
Alexandria is also pretty booked. Newport is fairly open, as were the Smoky Mountains. I didn't check New Orleans or Villa Rica before the Summer starts (like next month is that conceivable?).
So, anyway, I went ahead and booked Villa Rica on Aug 30th. I can cancel anytime before tomorrow (Friday) night, which is completely short notice for you all, I know, and we probably won't be able to reach a consensus before then, so I rather expect to cancel it, but I went ahead and took it because, well, I could. Any chance that works for folks? Or pipe up if there are options you'd like me to check on.
Then we'd really be a cult! We could gather 'round and whuffle the baby and dangle cilantro over its head to predict its future by whether or not it cries.
If it's near Atlanta it's pretty much definite that I could make it, though BOP might not be able to, or maybe we could go at different times if it's over a few days. The timeshare sounds like a fantastic idea--thanks, dano. Further afield may be a problem for me, but there sure does seem to be a lot of interest in New England. How's that for completely unhelpful?
In any event, I, like, totally think we should have a southern meetup when taz is in Louisiana.
That's the start of school, and I can't take vaca then. I'd be up for a mini-Bunnystock in Northern New England. I just acquired a house with a view, and would consider hosting such an event. Haven't quite moved in, so life is complicated.
