Music quiz: Think of a band who took their name from the song titles or lyrics of another band.[More:]

There's a band called the Gigolo Aunts, named after the song "Gigolo Aunt" by Syd Barrett.

I know two bands named after Roxy Music songs: Ladytron, and Bananarama (who based the name on "Pyjamarama").

For the sake of this game, we're not talking about bands who shared a name with one of their own songs, like Big Country or Talk Talk.
The Rolling Stones!! (from a Muddy Waters song I think)

Radiohead. From a Talking Heads song.

Sisters of Mercy is from the Leonard Cohen song.
Pretty Girls Make Graves is from the Smiths song.

I *think* that Arab Strap got their name from the Belle and Sebastian song The Boy With the Arab Strap but I'm not sure of the chronological order of the two bands so I could be full of shit.

If mike9322 ever came around, he would point out that his favourite band, After Forever, is named after a Black Sabbath song.

Oh, and Judas Priest. From Bob Dylan's song the ballad of something-or-other and Judas Priest.

L7

From "Wooly Bully". . .(Let's not be L7)

I know this because I was in a band and we were going to call ourselves that and got preempted.

the one-hit-wonder mid-to-late 90s band "deep blue something" was originally named "leper messiah," which is from Ziggy Stardust

I wonder if Leper Messiah would've had a hit with that stupid song about Breakfast at Tiffany's.

There's a band called Burning Airlines, which I can only assume derived its name from the Brian Eno song "Burning Airlines Give You So Much More".

I still can't figure out how Deep Blue Something had a hit with it.

The Dixie Chicks took their name from Little Feat's "Dixie Chicken." I am so embarassed that I know this.

The Lovin' Spoonful took their name from Mississippi John Hurt’s Coffee Blues.

dammit gaspode, and here I was just running in here to post something about DCFC....

darn work, being all work-y today.

Leper Messiah is also a track from Metallica's Master Of Puppets album. There were loads of bad metal groups named after Judas Priest tracks but, luckily, my mind has forgotten who they were.

That's fucked up. I just came in the house like fifteen minutes ago with "Mannish Boy" in my head and remembered that's where the Stones got their band name. SYNCHRONICITY!!11!

I'm pretty sure:
Mayhem comes from Venom's "Mayhem with Mercy"
Bathory from Venom's "Countess Bathory"
Possessed from Venom's "Possessed"
St. Vitus could be from Black Sabbath's "St. Vitus Dance"
Exciter from Judas Priest's "Exciter"

Metal bands are pretty incestuous when it comes to this - there are literally hundreds. I know there are plenty of non-metal bands that do it to, but I'll be damned if I can think of any.

Oh wait, maybe one - Disco Inferno from that "Disco Inferno" song by that disco guy.

Oh! Oh!

Toad the Wet Sprocket!

Okay, not lyrics and not from a song, but... but...

I don't have a leg to stand on here, do I?

How could you have gone so long without including the OBVIOUS Death Cab for Cutie. Well, obvious if you were a fan of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band.

Actually, I'm surprised there haven't been notable groups named
The Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse
Keynsham
The Urban Spacemen
Trouser Press
Delicious Hot, Disgusting Cold
Rhinocratic Oaths
My Pink Half of the Drainpipe
Noises For The Leg
Rockaliser Baby
King Of Scurf
Incredible Shrinking Man on Euphonium
J. Arthur Rank on Gong

Eric's Trip, who were a very influential band out of Moncton, New Brunswick, took their name from a song from Sonic Youth's 'Daydream Nation'.

Incidentally, I've always been curious about the provenance of the name 'Arab Strap' myself (though I was pretty sure the band predated the B&S album), and the somewhat shocking answer was right there, in the Wikipedia:
Now I'm just that much wiser...

Ha! I too think Arab Strap the band predated the B&S album, but this lends credence to my theory that every Belle & Sebastian song is about sex, even the ones that you think aren't.
