If my memory of the excellent BBC series "Planet Earth" is accurate, the mom is indeed exhausted. When the mother and cubs exit their den, she hasn't eaten in literally months, and is on her last reserves of fat.

But, yes, after watching that series, I unilaterally decided that there is nothing cuter on this planet than a polar bear cub.
