01 April 2008

This is the last post on personal matters for a while. Thanks very, very much for all the support and good advice you have given me.[More:]

I wanted to clarify a few things.

1) I've been seeking therapy since late spring last year. The first therapist just sort of agreed with everything I said, the second was a CBT therapist who trudged through a workbook without really connecting with me.

Husband and I are looking for a new therapist and he's willing to go, too, to learn how he can help me better. If anyone knows a good reference service for therapists (better than random googling) that would be great. We are willing to pay for quality but how do we find it?

I am aware that my posts have been a downer and I am really grateful for your support, folks. I'll post an extra lot of cute kittens to make up for it.
I'd suggest you have a look here, the website for the Professional Body for Counselling and Therapy in Scotland. There's a link to a .pdf listing therapists. And there's a picture of lambs on the front page too.

Good luck, my dear.

Good luck...it's worth the trouble to find a good therapist. It makes a huge difference. Keep on it!

[catching up on the other thread] I echo the suggestion to ask your question on AskMe.

There's got to be a better way than picking random off the internet

There is, but it takes work. Don't depend on your husband and his attention span to do this work for you. Prepare to dedicate yourself in a serious way to finding a good therapist. It's not the easiest thing - spending an hour on the internet is a start, but it takes more than that, and you don't want to go with a random pick. Make some phone calls to the offices -describe the things you want to work on and ask whether they have anyone who is experienced in treating those issues. See if you can make a brief appointment to meet the people they want to match you with and see if there is a fit. You might end up 'interviewing' a few people before selecting a counselor. It's well worth the time and effort. People seem to spend more time looking for the right hairdresser than the right therapist - I suppose that is understandable given the fact that many people decide they need help while in crisis and feeling urgent about it, but it doesn't have to be that way. It's worth it to make a thoughtful decision about who you're going to give your trust, time and money so they can help you find ways to solve your problems. It's a fairly significant relationship - more intimate than the relationship you have with most doctors or other professionals - so it's worth doing some study and canvassing before making the choice. Go in deciding you want it to work this time, and act accordingly.

You're welcome and why would you punish us by posting pictures of kittens? unless they're sex kittens, of course, in which case go right ahead.

Good luck in your search and don't feel like you can't come to us for a chat whenever you feel like it.

Yeah- I don't mind a bit. And if you're feeling like you're in the red in the cuteness-accounting, just post more puppy pictures.

Just a thought.

/NOT a doctor, mind you (but my father fit this to a tee, so some bells were ringing given your recent threads)
