Tonight is Earth Hour Turn out your lights between 8 and 9 p.m.
Wonder what kind of consumption surge rolls through the grid as Earth Hour ends.

Unfortunately, I doubt that participation will be heavy enough to make much of a difference, BOP.

Especially if people don't also unplug their refrigerators and shut down their electronics. Still, the intentions seem good.

Good intentions or not, Google freaked my shit right out this morning. I thought I'd broken the gf's computer when it came up like that.

8 and 9 in every time zone?

OK, new phrase. . must figure out how to work it in.

Blackle is like that all the time, pups. It's just a black Google. :)

Danf, I'm not sure where or when I first came across "freak my shit" but I use it all the time now. It's surprisingly easy to "work in."

OK. Mine are off. Now what?

Now dance.

Earth hour is over here now. Thanks to ethylene, I danced. Did I save the world? Can you tell?

We lit a buncha teacandles and played with our new wind-up powered weather radio. The cats thought the whole thing was terribly mysterious.

Shoot! I forgot to do this. Most of the lights were off, but we were playing Buzz The Mega Quiz on the PS3. Does that still count, that my TV was on? I would think not. I'm a lights off kind of person anyway. It makes me nervous to have lights on that aren't in use. Not because I'm some kind of environmental do-gooder (which I want to be and think is good) but because my parents were so strict about not wasting electricity and water. It's ingrained.

So that's what the google thing was all about. I doubt I would have ever associated it if I hadn't read it here.
posted by Ardiril 29 March | 22:23
Yeah, ardiril, they have a little note right there on the front page. But I didn't see it the first couple times. It doesn't exactly jump out.
posted by mudpuppie 29 March | 22:25
Well, how about that! I guess the only thing that registers for me on google anymore is the search box.

Yeah, we did this. What a wast of time. They would have been better off not doing it and saving all the carbon they created by planning and promoting this event. I must admit that I did laugh when I saw on TV a story about how, if you burn standard wax candles, you release more carbon into the atmosphere than leaving your lights on, so that's a positive, I think.

So Bill Clinton came to town last night || Every rediscover someone in your iPod that you'd forgotten about?
