Time-management experts advise people who want to get a handle on their time to keep a minute-by-minute log of how they spend their time for a week. If you did this, what would yours show?

I am supposed to do this. It is far too arduous and in the end, my logs are cribbed together at the end of the week and are wide-swaths of

I think this would be a good project. I would naturally do more if I had to keep a record.

Oh, the things I could do if I used my time effectively!

It was a PALACE! It was a PALACE and it CAN BE A PALACE AGAIN!

I saw a lecture at CMU given by Watts Humphrey , the inventor of the Personal Software Process, and he has a giant spreadsheet that details every minute of his life for the last 15 years. During the talk, he opened up the spreadsheet and added something like "2:00-3:00 Gave talk to graduate students". He thinks that everyone should do this for every task that they do and then use linear regression to predict how long it will take them to do similar task in the future.

What mgl said. Except replace "metachat" with Mefi and a couple of other sites, including hopeless real estate fantasies. *rolls eyes at self*

I can only keep that level up for about two weeks, for the occasional time study. One thing I did all last year was write down all the things I *accomplished* that day. That was very useful when it came time for the annual review.

"Why yes, I can tell you what I did all year."

I've had to do it for organisational reviews at work, usually for two weeks at a time, and it sucks. I'm a multitasker (talking on the phone while typing, etc) which makes it even harder. I'd hate to have to keep a log for billable hours. I like your idea of noting accomplishments, lysdexic - I write 'I have learned' statements at the end of the day but writing down all the things you've achieved is a great idea.
