My sadness over this is surpassed only by my shame at having assumed Widmark was already dead. Hell of an actor -- his films were actually one of the ways my father and I bonded when I was a kid. Dad loved Widmark and instilled that same love in me.

Crap. I loved Richard Widmark. He was very good in many films, but I think my personal favorite is one of the lesser known gems of the Cold War period, The Bedford Incident with Sidney Poitier, Martin Balsam, James MacArthur, and Wally Cox. One of the few cases where the film is not only better than the book, but manytimes better than the book.
