Vacation ideas? [More:]

My birthday is on a Friday the 13th this year (yay!), so I'm planning on taking a 3-day weekend. But I could take as long as a week. Problem is, I have no idea where I'd like to go.

I'm not a sandy-beachy type person. I like exploring and adventure. I could take the missus with me, but she's limited on vacation time (cannot take an entire week). I'd kind of like to take a motorcycle trip somewhere, but there's not room for her and I and luggage on my small bike. I'd also like to take her somewhere; I'm evenly split on that (so maybe the answer is 2 mini-vacations).

I'd almost certainly rather ride/drive somewhere than fly. This complicates matters, since my closest friend from college who's not in NYC is almost 500 miles from here. I go to NYC all the time, so I don't think that would be very vacation-y. One idea my gf liked was checking in to Kate's Lazy Meadow for some seclusionary wackiness. It's a bit pricey, though.

Whaddaya got, MetaChat? Suggestimate me sumthin' already!
Previous (solo) vacation I enjoyed. One of the best vacations we've spent together was staying in a B&B in Vermont and driving around to look at things like antique stores and Norman Rockwell museums (plus hiking).

I'm asking this early in the year to make sure I can reserve a) the time off and b) lodging wherever we end up going.

Bar Harbor/Acadia, in ME? Crazy scenic, nice feeling of being far away, yet plenty to do - hiking, art galleries, concerts at the gazebo, movies, museums.

What about riding somewhere (possibly where your non-NY friend lives) a couple of days ride away, have your girlfriend fly out there to spend a couple of days with you, then she can fly back and you ride back?

I'll just mention: I'm confident that NE-area MeChazens would turn out for a birthday outing if you proposed one.

That's true!

A thought: you could come up on your motorcycle (with whatever luggage you could fit), spend some time touring around solo, then she could hop the train to Portland (end of the line), where you could pick her up in time for the meet-up!

Do you like how I made the birthday meet-up all hypothetically and conveniently local to me? I am so slick.

Alternatively, perhaps the train would take cargo/luggage, freeing up cycle space for the two of you? I have no information on this subject --- I'm just spitballin' here.
