The original theme (by Peter Hawkins and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop - which probably meant just him in a shed somewhere) has got to be one of the most recognisable and evocative theme tunes ever written.
You only have to hear the first few notes to know what show is coming on (good for a TV theme) and it's unique and strange, just like the show was when I was a kid. (I haven't watched it in decades, so I have no idea if it's any good now, but in the days of Patrick Troughton, when I was just a nipper, it ruled.)
Trivia: During WW2 Peter Hawkins was in the same RAF unit as my dad.
