Title brought to you via this
this MeFi post and shamelessly yoinked from Paul Ford of The Morning News.
"Creature", he writes,
"is a massive relief from Montreal. For the first few seconds it all sounds like a mistake—perhaps they are the new Waitresses?—and then I realized that they are wonderful and exhaled a long sigh.
Some things that remind me of Creature: dancing with a golden retriever up on its hind legs; jumping on your parents’ bed to FM radio; a treehouse that is also a helicopter. Far and above my favorite of this set; I bought their album immediately and it is just as good as the song linked above."
That still doesn't quite describe how insanely great this stuff is, though. I also did a little digging and bought the .mp3 album (www.sugartune.com) and it is indescribably wonderful. Let me see if I can try to go Paul Ford one better:
Imagine, if you will, that The Go! Team and Siouxie Sioux kidnapped !!! and Kirk Pengilly (the sax player from INXS), then they all got wired on whip-its and Red Bull, went to an amusement park, raced bumper cars and danced all night in a bouncy castle, then wrote songs about the experience? That might kind of give you a feeling for the band
Creature, out of Montreal.
I don't agree with all of Paul Ford's assessments (so, okay, he liked Born in the Flood, and they're our local boys, but goddammit he tried really really hard to hate their demo, which totally doesn't get across the part how unfuckingbelievably
fantastic they are live. But I think he's on the right track by inferring that Creature is one of the best things to come out of SXSW this year.
