Music about food. I'm looking for music about (or related to) food for a radio show I'm helping with on Wednesday. Musically, I'm looking for alternative style music. Think Calexeco, Cowboy Junkies and Tom Waits. Any suggestions?
Pissed Jeans, "I've Still Got You Ice Cream"

OK, OK. I take it back.

I don't mind it a bit punkier. NO SWEARING though.
God damned motherfucking local radio laws.

I've already had to dump Bettie Serveert - Sugar The Pill because of the F Bomb.

A few that leap to mind:

"Eggs and Sausage" - Tom Waits (seriously, this one is great)
"Flavor of the Month" - The Posies
"Fruit Nut" - XTC
"Lost in the Supermarket" - The Clash
"In the Crowd" - The Jam (also talks about being in the supermarket, namechecks Wall's ice cream, etc.)
"Savoy Truffle" - The Beatles (not alternative, but still might work?)

"I Like Food" by the Descendents. No swearing in it IIRC.

Isn't there a cool Dylan song on Desire about "one more cup of coffee"? If coffee is a food.

No swearing? !@#!@$!@$tf. I was going to recommend Cibo Matto's "Birthday Cake," but now I alas cannot.

Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk -- Rufus Wainwright
Wasted and Ready -- Ben Kweller (not strictly about food, but contains the phrase "sex is like eating spaghetti")
Know Your Onion! -- The Shins (Only about food in the title, alas)
The Little Acorn -- Fruit Bats
Sugar High -- Shivers Coyote
Sugar on the Knees -- David Mead

a few more:

"Chocolate Cake" - Crowded House
"Milkman of Human Kindness" - Billy Bragg ("I will leave an extra pint"!)
"Empire of the Senseless" - Mekons (final verse starts out "baked beans, sugar, and margarine / bread, jam, groceries, and lard / for the unsentimental." Also: one of the greatest songs of all-time!)
"Ice Cream Every Day" - Camper Van Beethoven

Also, there might be some other good suggestions in this AskMe re: songs about ice cream and candy.

Actually, anything off of Cibo Matto's Viva! La Woman would be great, but I strongly suggest their cover of "The Candy Man." It's resplendently weird, it rocks, and there's no swearing.

New Young Pony Club "Ice Cream"
The Donner Party "Would You Like To Have Something To Eat?" (mentions all kinds of food)
Wilco "Candyfloss"
Kelly Hogan "Sugarbowl"
Death By Chocolate "Ice Cold Lemonade"

The first and last ones may be a bit too pop for your needs, but maybe not.

on preview: hugs scody for the Mekons love!

Red Beans and Rice- Spearhead
Black Gang Coffee- Mike Watt
The Lemon Song- Led Zeppelin (not really the right genre and only arguably related to food, but included for completeness).

Oh, and if beverages are OK:

"One More Cup of Coffee" - White Stripes
"For the Price of a Cup of Tea" - Belle & Sebastian
"Streams of Whiskey" - The Pogues
"Gin-Soaked Boy" - Tom Waits
"Gin-Soaked Boy" - Divine Comedy (totally different song, not a cover)

high-fives BoringPostcards! Woo, Mekons!

Oh, I've got a ton of songs about booze. But I figured, you know, booze was a whole other category. :)

Interesting, people write songs about stimulants more than food, per se. No one's writing about a nice pot roast or a burrito.

The song you want is "Maximum Consumption" by The Kinks. It is practically just a list of food with a vibe close to what you're after.

Things that jump out in my iTunes:

"Crackers Rule" - Kelly Hogan (a punny choice, but a great song)

"Coffee & TV" - Blur

"All Her Favorite Fruit" - Camper Van Beethoven

"Caramel" - Suzanne Vega

"Pour Some Sugar on Me" - Emm Gryner cover

"Bird Stealing Bread" - Iron & Wine

"Rock Candy Brains" - Kristin Hersh

"All Night Diner" - Modest Mouse

"Mayonnaise" - Smashing Pumpkins (actually, anything by the Smashing Pumpkins would qualify, no?)

"Bird Feet Feelings" - Trailer Bride, if you want to kind of think of it like Chinese dim sum

How about Sarah McLachlan - Ice Cream? Youtube

Not to nitpick, but...

Sugar High -- Shivers Coyote

The artist is Coyote Shivers, not the inverse. I actually sorta knew him years ago. Imagine my surprise to see him pop up in Empire Records!

Ooops. I was just copying down from my iTunes list. Must have had it reversed. Thanks, richat.
