Crossposting my AskMe, just in case... [More:]
This whole situation is totally f-ing stupid. my gf has had to get three deferments is three months, because they are incompetent or something. Then this was the last straw, she is freaking out about money and i'm livid because this was all avoidable.
deferments *in* three months

I hope that you have a good paper trail on this. If you do, I would go there, sit down, and keep sitting there until they can find someone who can rectify this.

I think that, if you are in the right, it will get fixed, but it will also take and inordinate amount of persistence, and hassle, because the people who run the financial systems want it that way. They do not want people empowered to correct mistakes. Costs them money.

She told the bank what the amount was, which was on the letter that the DOE sent her, the amount they actually debited was $.05 more than what was on the letter.

So, we should just go to the bank and show them all the paperwork that we have, and complain until they fix it?

Thank you

If she has the amount on a piece of paper then by God she should be emailing and faxing that to anyone who will give her the time of day. I'd be complaining to the DOE as well that the amount they gave her was incorrect, and that they should give her the money back because she was awarded a deferment. I assume she's not in school now, but in case she is, have her call up her financial aid office and ask for their advice.

Also, she should document the chain of events clearly, in writing, such as:

March 12, 8:00 am CST: Talked to Joe Smith at DOE about deferment. He said the amount to be debited was $142.45 and could not be cancelled.

March 12, 9:00 am CST: Talked to Jane Doe at Bank X. She stated that the debit for $142.45 would be stopped.

March 13, 3:00 pm CST: Checked bank account balance online. Discovered withdrawal of $142.50.

March 13, 3:15 pm CST: Called Bank X, spoke to.... you get the idea.

desjardins: when she spoke to the bank after she noticed the debit, the person she spoke to would not tell her their name, or the name of the person she had previously spoken to.

We have to wait until Monday, but then she is going to go and talk to a banker and stay until they fix this.

thanks for all your help.
