07 March 2008

GAH! Daylight Saving Time starts in the US this weekend. So when my clock goes off at 5:30 Monday morning, my body will think it's 4:30 am. *groan*
I hear ya. My alarm starts going off at 4:45 am, although I hit snooze until 5:15.

I always try to use Sunday to adjust, but it never works. Monday is always painful.

It never works for me either, misskaz. For one thing, it takes me more than a day to get used to doing everything earlier.

Same here, bp.

Yuck. I hate spring forward. And I hate the way it happens earlier and earlier in the spring and later and later in the fall. It means I'm going to be walking the dogs in pitch black darkness for the next month until the sunrise finally moves up.

*cries*

And THAT is my opinion of the whole thing.

Ohhhhhh, but the looooooooooooong evenings! With sun! There will be sun! Even after I get home! It will not be so dark! Yay, sun!!!

I'm sorry, I know the transition weekend/week sucks, but I so adore Daylight Saving Time. It is a like a giant stamp of government approval of my happiness.

I just wish they'd pick one or the other, so it was consistent.

I'm with you, occhiblu. the first couple of days will be rough, but the idea of seeing sunshine again on a weekday is just... I mean, it's the Sun. On a weekday. I shall celebrate with running, and much walking of Dog.

I think we have to wait a couple of weeks before ours go forward.

Why do you mock me?

Seriously, I had trouble getting to sleep Sunday night because of a discussion I had with Science Girl regarding DST and all the sun that comes with it. DO NOT WANT.

Sorry, bmarkey. If it helps, you could come to SF in July and August, when there's so much fog that it pretty much blocks out the sun.

I'm with occhiblu on this one. There's no way in hell I'm going to ever get up with the sun, except in December when I can't help it, so for me, "longer evenings" are a very real and very utilitarian concept. I leave work, and have hoooours of beautiful daylight to walk in the park, toss a frisbee, sit on the porch and read...and in the summer, it means I can go to the beach after work, which makes it feel like I got 2 days for one.

The best was the summer I lived in Michigan, at the western edge of the time zone. The sunset in June and July was happening just a bit before 10 PM.

What? Already? Seriously? Haven't they outlawed this shit yet?

My current job is basically flex hours, so I'm going to see how not converting this year affects stuff. You know SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)? I think I get DSTAD. I need to sleep when I sleep, and it needs to be the same solar time, not arbitrary clock time.

Out of touch
With the weather and the wind direction
With the sunrise
And the phases of the moon
Out of touch
With life in the land of the loving
With the living night
And the darkness at high noon

I want to live by the sun, not by anyone's clock. Obviously, I'll still wear a watch so I can meet people at appointed times. I'll also probably still end up waking with my girlfriend's alarm clock, but that just means more incentive to get to bed at night, with the sun.

I think I've finally made my peace with DST, but there was a time when I felt personally robbed and outraged every time it came around.

Thanks, occhiblu. I used to live in Oakland, and grew up in the East Bay. I moved to Seattle, for the weather (among other things).

It's a trade-off, really. We actually get some rainy, overcast days during the summer here (not as many as people think, mind you), but the sun rises insanely early (think 4:30AM) and sets around 10, 10:30PM or so. It's horrible if you've got reverse SAD. That said, the winters work out pretty well for me.

Hee. When I was growing up, we always made fun of various parts of Indiana for not switching the clocks because it confused the cows.

Daylight Stupid Time, I call it. And we live in the future. If I can't have a flying car (thank you President Carter), can't I at least have clocks that automatically adjust to this chronological abomination? Fucking farmers.
