Weirdest headline of the day: Blind Irishman sees with the aid of son's tooth in his eye[More:]

I read the article and thought "Wait. What?" and found some more information.

Then I read this:

Ask Prof. Falcinelli how he got interested in the eye and he turns emotional. Peppino, a childhood friend, wanted to keep his hands warm in winter. So he devised a contraption: a container that had lime in it with water dripping from another source. Unfortunately too much water got in and the mixture splashed on his face resulting in loss of vision.

and thought "Wait. What?"

So my question is: how on earth would lime/water/container keep his hands warm?
It's not quite as weird as Giant Pink Bunny Found On Hillside.

Whoops! That's what I get for trying to make a quick post while at work!

I still really want to know how lime in water would keep someone's hands warm, though.

Specklet! Wooo!

Umm... oh yeah, think quicklime or calcium oxide - that's what is meant in the article, not the fruit.
