Horrible. [More:]
I know football (I'm talking soccer here) isn't as physical a game as it was 20 years ago, thanks to rule changes which are meant to give players more protection. But every now and then something happens to remind everyone that, yes, it is a tough game.

Today was such a day. Three minutes into the Birmingham v Arsenal game Martin Taylor tackled Eduardo of Arsenal, and the result was so gruesome that it will not be shown again on TV.

There's a few still pictures here. Warning, it's horrendous.
Cannot watch! The minute I saw "broken leg" I had to close it. Men are animals! (I joke)

I didn't look at the pictures either, but it sounds like the famous Joe Theisman break. Far from vowing to never show it again, American TV likes to trot out that bit of awful whenever it has an excuse.

Ugh, you can see the bone sticking out. I've only seen the still pictures but it didn't look as gruesome as the Theisman break. There's got to be video of this somewhere, right?

Ugh. It actually took me quite a while to figure out what I was looking at.

I recall when the Michael Vick story broke, we were subjected to many, many clips of dog fight videos. "CNN is shocked and horrified at this practice... roll that clip again."

My sister broke another girls' leg in a soccer game one time, although it wasn't what happened here (no bone sticking out).

I'm going to have nightmares now from googling Joe Theisman's leg break and finding the reverse camera slow-mo video. holy cow.

Ah, Sky:

Sky Sports said they would not replay the incident because the pictures were too horrific

And on the right:

I've been seeing those pics all over the net. Yuck. I'm not sure what's worse- that broken leg or the Richard Zednick sliced carotid artery thing a couple weeks ago.

Oh god, the horror of compound fractures! The last time I looked at one was in high school during a first-aid film in health class, and the next thing I knew I was on the floor with smelling salts being waved under my nose.

I remember at a big volleyball tournament once, this girl broke her arm, bits sticking out and everything. I was in the back gym and didn't see it happen, but I saw the aftermath and definitely had to try and not giggle when the girl was talking to her mom and wasn't worried about the hospital visit or anything, but instead said:

"We can still go shopping, right?"

Oh, teenage girls. Heh.

He will be back

I hope so.

Play was interrupted for 10 minutes before Busst was stretchered off and blood from his wounds was washed off the pitch.

Jesus.

After the Busst injury, Peter Schmeichel, the Manchester United goalkeeper, needed counselling for several months, he was so traumatised by the injury.
