What annually televised show is an absolute “must see” for you?→[More:]An appropriate question, what with the Oscars being Sunday and all. But my answer is the Tonys.
Mostly Sports stuff: Superbowl, World Series, March Madness. I'm not that big a sports fan but if you don't watch such things then you have no idea what anyone is talking about later.
Jon Stewart is the only reason to watch the Oscars this year, I'm a big movie geek but they always seem to reward the worst movies for the worst reasons.
And the Daytona 500, even if it's just for a second or two. The National Anthem and Gentleman Start Your Engines stuff. It's a big deal around here. I love how TV makes Daytona Beach look so pretty.
Nothing, really. It used to be the lighting of the giant Xmas tree in downtown Atlanta on Thanksgiving evening (and when possible, I'd attend it person) but now that the tree has been moved out to the roof of a mall, the whole tradition feels kinda dead to me.
It used to be the Miss America Pageant, but now they've fussed and tinkered with it so much that I don't enjoy it anymore. So, probably just the Rose Parade now.
Oh, absolutely! I was going to say nothing, because TV seems to get less interesting all the time - but this is totally the exception, a must-see. We often go to the parade itself, but if we aren't up for the effort, it must be watched!
I usually at least turn on the Superbowl, though I don't think of it as a "must see" unless I'm watching it with friends.
I love the Thanksgiving Day parade, and used to watch it every year when I was growing up, but it was only this past year that I thought to turn it on as an adult. Fun!
I always *want* to watch the Kentucky Derby, but I often tend to forget when it's on. But I love it when I do see it.
Tour de France. predictable, neh? several of the bars / cafes here in Denver broadcast the Eurosport live feeds and we always go watch the really crucial stages.
There's nothing that I'd really consider a must-see, but, as longtime site readers might know, I've got a soft spot for live television spectacle. Just about every year, I watch a half-dozen awards shows, a few press conferences and a couple big live sporting events.
Which reminds me, I think there should be a London/South East bunnies/MeFi Eurovision party this year.
Sounds good (depending on cashflow). I've been to fancy dress Eurovision parties for the last couple of years, but this year the host couple and two of the other couples have/will have had kids for the first time, so no party for me.
In lieu of the Superbowl I watch the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet every year since it started. It's completely awesome.
The other two are the Westminster Dog Show and the Oscars, but I watch that mainly so I can be up to snuff to watch all the after-Oscar shows where they pick apart everyone's clothes and hair.
Must see? None. Try to catch? Rudolph, Charlie Brown Xmas, etc. And my hatred of award shows has attained mythological status, to the point where it is actually worshipped in several cultures.
Super Bowl. Sunday at the Masters (I don't play golf, but this is a family tradition that has somehow become an excuse to drink mimosas and eat eggs bennie). Westminster. World Series. Stanley Cup finals, back in the golden days when there was hockey on TV (I don't get Versus). Last ten laps of the Talladega 500 (required by law for state residency).
Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In the days before VHS and DVDs, I HAD to see all the Christmas classics. The Super Bowl, too, is a must see. Though I'm not sure if that's my "must see" or my husband's.
We don't get the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade here, but that sounds like fun. The only globally watched American programme that the whole world hunkers down to see is the Academy Awards probably, like me.
Oh, and I like to watch the Grand Slams too, Pips!
