This is all very sad. [More:]
Paul Gascoigne was probably one of the most talented footballers I've ever seen - an intuitive player with the kind of skills that can't be learned. Like Wayne Rooney, Gazza was a natural footballer - probably not the brightest crayon in the pack in terms of intellect, but with an instinct for the game that put him head and shoulders above his contemporaries.

But there was always something not ... well, right about him. He was like the attention-seeking little kid who didn't know when to stop showing off. He was forgiven so much, though, because of his talent on the football pitch.

But then it all started to go horribly wrong. He became an embarrassment - I remember particularly when he was playing for England and was doing a pre-match interview. Asked if he had a message for England's opponents, Norway, he replied "Fuck off, Norway". Live. On TV. He just didn't get that it was inappropriate. He thought it was funny. The Football Association had to apologise.

And so it continued ... nightclubs, mayhem, wife-beating, rehab, relapse, weird jobs (in China and Kettering), leaving jobs, losing jobs ...

And now today, this.

Every time I've seen him on TV in the last couple of years he's looked to be in so much pain - mental pain. I hope he gets the help he needs.
I'd forgotten quite how embarrassing he could be.

Poor lad. I hope he sorts himself out.

Funny coincedence, Jan: I was just sorting through some books and journals last night, and came across the Gazza Agonistes issue of Granta, so I was wondering whatever happened to him. I've never really followed soccer football, but I remember watching the World Cup and being weirdly fascinated by him, and feeling sad when I read Ian Hamilton's article about how troubled he was.

it's sad. all that booze cannot have helped his preexisting problems, by the way.

I dare to suggest that, in hindsight, he was a bit overrated as a footballer.

matteo, I think his main problem was inconsistency, and that could possibly be ascribed to his mental problems, which nobody knew about then (and his drinking, which was well-documented). When he was on form and focussed, he was incredible.

I hear you but if you consider his first-rate contemporaries -- Gullit, Baggio, Matthaeus, Romario, Careca, not to mention Maradona -- Gascoigne does not belong with them. the same when the history of this years is written, Beckham will not belong to the small group of real superstars -- Kaką, Messi, Figo, Ronaldinho, Raul, Zidane, Ronaldo.

he was very impressive; but in the end a wasted, uneven career.

Well, overrated or not, I'll leave to the fans. For me, having been on the mental illness road, hopefully this arrest will begin to get him the help he needs to feel some control and happiness with himself and others.
