Romance Is Not Dead Last week, we got an email here at the museum from a young man with an interesting request.[More:]He wanted to know if he could hide a scavenger hunt hint here - a surprise scavenger hunt for his girlfriend, specifically, that would take her all over Asheville and end up with an engagement ring. Well, of course we said yes.

So he just came in. He is so cute! He brought a picture of his girlfriend so we would know who she was and make sure that we didn't charge admission (he gave us a donation, too, totally nice guy) and he hid a hint in a nice envelope tied with ribbon under a piece of petrified wood in the back gallery. I said, "Congratulations!" and he laughed and said, "Well, not yet!"

This is adorable. I am in awe. They are so cute. Yay for romance! Yay for sweet guys with imaginative minds! I hope they live happily ever after!
Well I hope SHE says yes! One would need a high degree of confidence to do this sort of thing.

Sweet. I wonder what the clue will be to lead her to the piece of petrified wood. [/nosy]

Okay, I *hate* clever, elaborate, public wedding proposals. Every time I hear one, I think "gah! poor girl!" I once saw one in bughouse square, complete with photographer and saxophonist (who was quite good, actually) and the couple looked very very happy, but I kept thinking "gah! gawkers! Wait! That dog is going to run through!" and "how embarassing!"

HOWEVER, this sounds lovely. Really wonderful. I hope it's thrilling for both. How nice of you to help.

I wonder what the clue will be to lead her to the piece of petrified wood.

I came up with a dirty little couplet that covers it. I'm a little embarrassed to share it though.

I wonder if he plans to have a photographer hiding out at the last clue.

You tease! Tell! If it's something about 'wood', don't worry, I'm right there with you ;)

Look under the wood for the final clue.
(the wood in these pants is inspired by you)

I fear that the engagement would be OFF, after that.

and if it's something about "back gallery"... then, you know... shame on you! :)

Petrified wood in the back gallery. Straight from The Girl's Guide To Getting A Ring, page 36.

Not for the proposal, pokermonk; one saves that for the 25th wedding anniversary.
posted by taz 21 February | 12:07
You have to let us know when the girl comes looking!
posted by dabitch 21 February | 12:08
ah... "I'll have", not "I have". My mistake.

Sure, that could work.
posted by taz 21 February | 12:08
That is so sweet!

Petrified wood, so it's stuck that way? Forever? And, to imagine the teevee ads talking about 4 hours.

Heheh back gallery. Heheheh back gallery.

I think that I shall never see
A thing so lovely as prehistoric Cialis

This sounds awesome. I usually am not one for elaborate proposals, either, but this one would actually be just plain fun. I love doing hunts like this.

I may start a thread about elaborate proposals...hang on.

I am shocked and horrified by y'all's dirty minds, I must say. Shocked and horrified and laughing my ass off.

She hasn't shown up yet. The entire staff is waiting anxiously; it's hilarious. I will provide updates as they come in.

"The entire staff is waiting anxiously..."

If this is what counts as an exciting day at the museum, it's no wonder that I enjoy museums so much.

I can't wait to hear what happens.
posted by iconomy 21 February | 14:12
OMG she better totally say yes.
posted by Hellbient 21 February | 14:13
Where the hell ARE they? It's, like, 2:20 there isn't it?

(pics would be nice, but I am not making any reckless wishes)
posted by danf 21 February | 14:21
Man, I hope she's not too dumb to figure out the clues. Maybe she's, like, really, really dumb, and this whole scavenger thing is going to reveal her lack of intelligence. That would really suck.

"Hi, do you have a lost and found? I think someone lost a ring back by the petrified wood."
posted by Hellbient 21 February | 15:48
I hope she's able to find the museum.
posted by iconomy 21 February | 15:59
Maybe they got in a fight on the way over.
posted by danf 21 February | 16:19
Or maybe romance really is dead.
posted by mudpuppie 21 February | 16:21
Y'all, this is not looking good. She has not shown up and we're closing in 20 minutes. Perhaps romance is dead after all? Maybe she got held up at work? Uh oh. Maybe I should have waited for the happy ending to post this!
posted by mygothlaundry 21 February | 16:41
*keeping fingers crossed*
posted by iconomy 21 February | 16:42
You made the clues too hard, romance guy!
posted by iconomy 21 February | 16:44
Are you sure she was supposed to come in today?
posted by occhiblu 21 February | 16:45
And, or course, there is no way, MGL, for you to tell them how disappointed all of us are! Or if you did, he'd probably not understand.
posted by danf 21 February | 16:49
WAIT!! SHE DID COME AFTER ALL AND FOUND HER HINT!!!

Drat the front desk person! Just because she had 27 home schoolers to deal with she forgot to call me! Argh!

Anyway, the actual ring wasn't here, just another hint. So she went off and continued her scavenger hunt and tomorrow we're going to email them and see if it all went well and if so we are going to attempt to bribe them to come back so I can take their picture and do a heartwarming little press release and also put it in the newsletter so our members, who are like, mostly over the age of 70, can read it and be heart warmed and leave us all their filthy, filthy lucre.

Mgl has been working for museums way too long, forgive her. Yes, nothing ever happens - it's a museum, not a hospital, nobody is going to die - they've already been dead for centuries! Ha ha! /museum joke
posted by mygothlaundry 21 February | 16:58
Yeah, I bet his set-up is going to take more than a day. You'll probably see her tomorrow or next week. (Unless he said she's coming today...)

posted by iconomy 21 February | 17:22
You need to print this thread out and give it to them for their engagement present.
posted by danf 21 February | 17:25
No, no, don't print it out! Buy a video camera and film the comments as you slowly scroll down the screen, then post it to YouTube!

YouTube engagement presents last forEVER!
posted by mudpuppie 21 February | 18:01
Yeah, but make them do an e-scavenger hunt to find the YouTube page.
posted by Hellbient 21 February | 18:05
And make them Twitter as they scavenge.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 21 February | 18:18
What you should have done is swapped the clue for a note saying ...

"Dear xxxx,

I didn't want to say this to your face because of your terrible temper. But things are over between us. Please do not try to contact me. I do not love you.

regards,
yyyyy"
