Funny.

Yep. I love appliances. I don't want to go down to the local watering hole and scrub my laundry against a warshin' board.

ohhh, yeaaah.

Oh. Ha ha.

I've always loved the (possibly old fashioned?) Brittish-ism of "appliance" for sewing dummy. It sounds so dirty.

Sewing form? What do you sewing people call it? You know what I'm talking about. Like a mannequin with no limbs and no head.

If you enjoy this kind of imagery, you may like this (Flash site, has a few sound effects).

rainbaby, I've never heard it called an 'appliance'. My mother had one and she called it a 'dummy' or a 'model'. I would call it a 'mannequin' or 'dummy'.

But in the UK, a 'dummy' is also what you would call a 'pacifier', one of those things you shove in a baby's mouth to stop it crying.

I've called it a "sewing form" or a mannequin.

It's also called a Dress Form, even if you use it for more than dresses! :)

When my mom was a teenager, she and all the other girls had a custom-made dress form built to her own proportions. Because back then, you know, girls made their own dresses for the dance! (Which I actually think is really cool.)

But I mostly came in here to say that when I vacuum, I put on a long flowing dress and dance around with the Eureka, as if it were my ballroom partner.

I have a metal one, but I don't sew. I just think it's cool.

You'll have to pry my Kitchen Aid stand mixer from my cold dead hands.

Also, any of you dress form-having bunnies want to make my wedding dress for me? I can't find anything off the rack that isn't crazy expensive or not at all what I want.

I adore my programmable, grinder equipped coffee maker. True love.

I have an antique dress form from the 1870s I love, used as a bag and scarf rack in the hallway. You can make your own dress form (to your proportions) with duct tape, mudpuppie - see here for eg. Sorry, misskaz, my mum's the seamstress, not me.

I would love a stand mixer, and I think that'll be my next appliance purchase. Otherwise, my ovens. One even has a pizza setting.
