10 February 2008

Late Weekend Update. Didja do it? Whatever "it" was.
I did the snowshoeing and birdfeeding and Arrested Development watching and resting and bathing. I did not do the talk writing [though I AskedMe for advice and got some good tips] or thank you card writing or cracker baking. I think I will write thank yous and bake crackers now.

Yes, I did. I was very successful at the relaxing and the being outside, and managed to go to a fantastically inspiring yoga class yesterday and to the gym today, which was not fantastically inspiring but was kind of fun. And I managed to get most of my reading for the week done while I was outside, so while that part doesn't count as "relaxing," having it done makes me feel more relaxed, and also, yay, sunshine!, so I'll count doing that as a net positive.

I didn't say what I was going to do, so yes, vacuously I must have done it.

"It" consisted of hopping in the car with dog and laundry, driving up to my parents' new sublet, hanging out with them Friday night, all day yesterday, and this morning. Among other things, we went to the farmers' market, worked out, did laundry, walked around the neighborhood, plugged quietly and companionably away at various individual writing projects, and watched It Happened One Night. After breakfast and more walks I piled my groceries, clean laundry, and dog back in the car and drove back down here. It was nice.

Same as tangy, I did not say anything. So yes, I did nothing with abundance. I made sauce all day yesterday. Which as I mentioned in IRC was silly since I don't normally eat red sauce, but I was trying to make a basic pasta sauce that had lots of beans and lentils in it without tasting bean-y. And it's pretty awesome, so there you go.

I also made a second batch of the bread that I've been talking about for like a month now. It was delicious.

It never stops surprising me that people make crackers. Crackers? Really? Crackers?!

I didn't post to that thread. But if I did, the answer would probably be "no," since I didn't accomplish much of what I had planned to this weekend. However, I did buy the glass and begin working on my first big stained glass project (something along the lines of this). I wish I had a space that I could use as a workshop. My tiny apartment is no place to be cutting up glass and soldering.

I said that I was going to watch a movie w/R on Friday, and hang w/A, B and B on Saturday, and work a lot, and that I had no idea what I was doing tonight.

Mission accomplished, except that we watched the movie (There Will Be Blood) on Saturday.

Yes. I did have the Thai dinner and we did go to the show. The show was terrible! So bad we almost left at intermission. We stayed just so we'd be able to hash out the full critique later, when we went to the bar to take it out on the bartender who recommended the show.

Then yes, the dump and Cosmic Bowl, all fun. Last night, quiet time. Today, doing bills, thinking about work, and I did get the gym in, and then went to our town caucus, about which more later. It did snow.

Is it Sunday night already?

We went to the pork dinner (check), so yeah. I accomplished a helluva lot more than I ever intended to thanks to the rat invasion. Fixed the hole in the roof; cleaned the bathroom; dealt with the annual winter mold problem in the bedroom; planted some cabbage, broccoli raab, chard, collards, herbs, and some pepper seeds.

Dear god, I'm exhausted. Just realized it.

Tonight I'm making cabbage rolls and watching The Wire.

amro, I love that design! My mother did stained glass (though we had a basement she could work in) and I've always been envious of people who could make such pretty things out of such a fragile medium. It seems very magical to me. (Plus, there's soldering, which seems way fun.)

I (still am) work{ed|ing}.

Felt incredibly exhausted all weekend, still feel tired. Despite having 10 hours sleep each night and naps both days.

Did manage to watch NZ-England cricket game. Did make it to the gym to run on the treadmill and do some weights. Did go to Chinese NY party, which was a lot of fun. Didn't clean apartment, and it's a pigsty, but I have no energy, and mr. g is still working on a presentation for tomorrow, so he's not cleaning either.

Must have early night.

It seems very magical to me.

The guy who co-owns the glass store, who was the first person to show me how to cut glass last year, was showing me some impressive tricks and tools yesterday and I exclaimed, "It's like a magic show!" So, I know what you mean.

Speaking of stained glass, my landlady's late husband was a stained glass artist and one of the things I'm going to miss most about this house [when she comes back from the Peace Corps in a few months] is the huge stained glass window that separates the TV room from the parlor. The only thing she told me when I left was "take care of the stained glass" I don't know if you can really see, but it's a guy in a rowboat sort of near a waterfall.

Yes. I downgraded my laptop from Vista to XP. Everything works but the modem driver. I haven't looked into the problem because I don't need the modem. I'm still installing my myriad applications and customizations.

I thought about staying with Vista as SP1 is coing out soon, and there's a new O'Reilly book on Vista Annoyances (here's a slashdot book review). But really, why go to the trouble? There's nothing in Vista I need. If some of the problems get sorted out in the next year or so, I may give it another look.

Yes, I survived the Reagan Day dinner and got to meet Elizabeth Dole.

Did a mound of laundry. Hung out with my son and watched Over the Hedge, made brownies and made a top secret experimental batch with an infusion of sweetened marscapone, which was chock full of FAIL (but not so much that it didn't go great with coffee ice cream).

Went to church with the family, hung out with the kids, took my daughter on a "date" and made Italian Wedding Soup for dinner.

what's Italian wedding soup? Can I serve it as a hint?

jessamyn, does the return of your landlady mean that you will no longer be host of the Home for Little Wanderers? I always meant to come visit for a weekend retreat type thing.

Jessamyn, that stained glass is very cool.

I want stained glass. I love the old Victorians around here that have all sorts of cool stained-glass windows.

And I highly recommend Ste-Chappelle next time you're in Paris (linked photos are not my photos).

I spent the end of last week with my mother, who had surgery last week.

It was... well, I'm home for now, so let's not dwell on it. She's doing splendidly, and she booted me out a day early (yesterday) so I wouldn't run the risk of being snowed in. I didn't argue.

I came home just in time to see The Fella off to work, then buckled down and worked on my first paper of the semester, which I've been writing for a couple of weeks now.

Tonight, I finished it that paper! Oh, yes, I did! Woo hoo!

I set myself a deadline of 11 p.m. I finished it at 10 p.m. Oh yeah! That's me! Shimmyshimmyshake!

Considering my very low barrier to success: yes, I did it. We caucused (and I failed to convince an undecided caucuser, along with several others having a go at it), and we watched some hockey (Flames won handily, Canucks were beaten like a gong). Also picked up some supplies we needed to hook up the chickadee/wren nest cam (hopefully will be up this week), did grocery shopping, walked the dog repeatedly, and some other stuff which I'm not going into here. ;)

I went to Sheffield for a meal with my brothers. We had Chinese Fondue. It was AWESOME. On the way there I read Wired. Jessamyn was name checked in an article about pay-per-mention blogging. W00t!

Hey, I missed that thread. I've been procrastinating dreadfully instead of working on my master thesis. I don't know what it is about papers...
But a friend dropped by unexpectedly and we went play speed badminton in the park. Nice to be in the sun after so many months of grey drizzle.

Snow! I haven't seen real snow in ages in NL. Must suck to grow up nowadays and not have any winters were you wake up in the morning to find out that suddenly everything is white and you run out excitedly to throw snowballs at each other.
Shoveling snow doesn't sound so bad from this distance.

I did exactly what I said I was going to do - beer, hiking, visit mom, baking, party, more beer, nothing. Now I feel weirdly boring and predictable.

Italian wedding soup is basically chicken soup with meatballs and spinach. It's not made from Italian weddings.

No! Only bit I accomplished was going to the hockey game. Poker was canceled, so no cleaning up and no bacon-wrapped yummies. Slept in too much for church AND for the gym. Accomplished little, feel like a slug.

I totally ski'ed!

It was awesome, although I wiped-out spectacularly on the chairlift today.

Yep, I worked, and on Sunday I shopped. Bought two new purses, one on clearance and one 30% off. Oh, and we also applied for passports. We're going to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, in June!!!!!!!!!

Oddly, that is exactly how my visit with my Mom went.

And amro, the house for little wandeers will relocate into less sumptuous digs but as long as I have more than a couch to call my own there will always be wanderers welcome.
