I just slept in my car at lunch: A Do or A Don't?
the car, the sleeping, or lunchtime?

As long as you're in a safe area, I think it's fine, rainbaby. (I've had to do it when traveling for work.)

If you awoke in time to get back to work on time, I see no problem. (MY problem is a tendency to take a "short nap" and awaken 2-3 hours later.)

I've done it, and would again.

Been there, done that (in the company lot.) I always parked at the back, but I've seen suits do it in plain sight.

Shane's verdict: Don't drool too apparently, massage off your face the lines from your coat or the seat or whatever you used as a pillow, and don't look hungover = you're okay?

I want to sleep now, after lunch.

I've done it, but not in the corporate parking lot, and with my cell phone alarm turned on.

It was probably the best 20min of sleep I've had since college.

Didn't oversleep, company lot, plain sight albeit back seat. I do feel hungover/foggy now, but I wasn't today. I'll go for months without doing it, but then the siren song calls to me. There just seems to be two camps on this issue - "Yeah, I've done that" and "YOU DID WHAAAT?" Shoot, I've done worse things in a car at lunchtime, amirite?

I recently served on a federal jury, and on the first day of the trial, after all the morning preliminaries, the judge gave us a 90 minute lunch break and strict instructions not to be late getting back to the courthouse. One member of the jury, who apparently lived close by, decided to skip lunch and go home for a quick nap during the recess. Bad idea. He woke up a few hours later (the bailiff eventually told us) to the sound of federal marshals pounding on his door. I'm pretty sure that guy would tell you it's a definite Don't.

Did you wear a seatbelt?
posted by mullacc 07 February | 13:29
No, I didn't mullacc, but it was definately my own car - I should get points for that.

There's no hard rule. It depends more on whether your co-workers are cool people or jerks.

I would totally do it. I'll sleep anywhere- I sleep on the subway on the way to work in the morning (if I'm not alone!), I've slept at hockey games, concerts, wherever. Sleeping = always YES.

It's a do in my book. I've done it. I kept waking up every few minutes, paranoid that I would be late.

I have a couch, in our weight room, that gets my body on it now and then around 2 my time. 15 minutes, and I am good to go.

There is usually no traffic through that room at that time, but if there is, it disrupts it, because, even though I have a legally mandated 15 minute break, I would prefer these catnaps to remain unknown to my coworkers, unless I choose to tell them.
posted by danf 07 February | 14:34
Do! Especially if the company storeroom is unavailable or uncomfortable. Power naps make the world go 'round.
posted by danostuporstar 07 February | 14:44
I can't take naps during the day. It takes me longer to wake up afterward than the nap took; I end up in a haze for hour or so. Also, I'm 6'2" so I don't really fit anywhere well enough to be comfortable to nap. An hour napping in my car would leave me looking like Quasimodo for the rest of the day.

I've done it. There's a loveseat in a coworker's office that I will nap on during the days she doesn't work. Best 20 minutes of the week.
posted by rhapsodie 07 February | 14:47
Oh yeah, totally done this. Mostly when I was working that shit ass inventory job and running off of no sleep whatsoever.

I basically took naps whenever they gave us 10 minute breaks to eat, which was practically never, but goddamn if it didn't help slightly.

Do! Use your cel phone as an alarm and tune the radio to a classical music station.
posted by halonine 08 February | 00:38
Interesting. It never even occurred to me that there would be something wrong with this. Even the most successful, motivated, and esteemed people need power naps.

Is it a fear of appearances that makes you worry about it?

The last internship I was at, I was really tired after lunch following a sleepless night, so I told my boss that I needed a cat nap. He suggested a small meeting room, and he blocked out that time on the company's Exchange calendar for the room. So I guess it really depends on where you work.
