Been there, done that (in the company lot.) I always parked at the back, but I've seen suits do it in plain sight.
Shane's verdict: Don't drool too apparently, massage off your face the lines from your coat or the seat or whatever you used as a pillow, and don't look hungover = you're okay?
Didn't oversleep, company lot, plain sight albeit back seat. I do feel hungover/foggy now, but I wasn't today. I'll go for months without doing it, but then the siren song calls to me. There just seems to be two camps on this issue - "Yeah, I've done that" and "YOU DID WHAAAT?" Shoot, I've done worse things in a car at lunchtime, amirite?
I recently served on a federal jury, and on the first day of the trial, after all the morning preliminaries, the judge gave us a 90 minute lunch break and strict instructions not to be late getting back to the courthouse. One member of the jury, who apparently lived close by, decided to skip lunch and go home for a quick nap during the recess. Bad idea. He woke up a few hours later (the bailiff eventually told us) to the sound of federal marshals pounding on his door. I'm pretty sure that guy would tell you it's a definite Don't.
I would totally do it. I'll sleep anywhere- I sleep on the subway on the way to work in the morning (if I'm not alone!), I've slept at hockey games, concerts, wherever. Sleeping = always YES.
I have a couch, in our weight room, that gets my body on it now and then around 2 my time. 15 minutes, and I am good to go.
There is usually no traffic through that room at that time, but if there is, it disrupts it, because, even though I have a legally mandated 15 minute break, I would prefer these catnaps to remain unknown to my coworkers, unless I choose to tell them.
I can't take naps during the day. It takes me longer to wake up afterward than the nap took; I end up in a haze for hour or so. Also, I'm 6'2" so I don't really fit anywhere well enough to be comfortable to nap. An hour napping in my car would leave me looking like Quasimodo for the rest of the day.
Interesting. It never even occurred to me that there would be something wrong with this. Even the most successful, motivated, and esteemed people need power naps.
Is it a fear of appearances that makes you worry about it?
The last internship I was at, I was really tired after lunch following a sleepless night, so I told my boss that I needed a cat nap. He suggested a small meeting room, and he blocked out that time on the company's Exchange calendar for the room. So I guess it really depends on where you work.
