MeFite Careers? Is there a Metafilter post about what users do for a living that I can not find? There must be one somewhere.
I actually am very interested in this, too, but I can't deal with all the noise in those old threads. I keep kind of a list in my head of what people do, because it's fascinating.
This is OT, but related to the question of "What do you do for a living?":
A friend of mine (U.S. native) used to work at CNN's Hong Kong Bureau, which was pretty large up to and around the time of the handover of HK back to the Chinese gov't. On one of her days off she wanted to take a day trip to the mainland, and had to apply for some kind of temporary visa to go in. She was rejected and told she wouldn't be allowed into the country, and she assumed it was because she'd listed her occupation as "journalist."
So in a week she tried it again, this time listing her occupation as "greeting card salesman." They let her in.
I could've sworn I posted in something like that, but then again, I might not have.
At any rate, I'm currently a library assistant with Johns Hopkins at APL. I basically do nothing but run a photocopier and shelve books/microform. All day. For 32 hours a week. I love my job.
gaspode, it's kinda funny. We're located at APL officially, but if we call them to tell them the damn power went out again or that the alarm went off because someone breathed too hard, they forget who we are. It's hilarious, at times.
dismas: You're right, both scenarios are correct - it depends on the day and what I'm exactly doing. the only true downfall is that I can't easily cross international borders anymore.
