MeFite Careers? Is there a Metafilter post about what users do for a living that I can not find? There must be one somewhere.
Here’s one: I’m pretty sure there have been others too.

Career? I have no career. When I grow up, though, I want to be a sphere.

You mean, apart from slacking off and reading MeFi?

Right now I'm doing book covers and p.o.s. for some chick-lit book.

Career? No way! I'm a responsible driver.

Oh, wait - I thought you said "careen".

Gah, I hate that thread -- it's years old and I said I was job hunting but today I'm still in the same job. Gah.

Hey, welcome to MeCha, Marie!

Still in the same job, myself.

Here's a slightly newer Meta thread - is that the most recent one? Maybe somebody should do another one. Not me! I only post meetups to Meta.

Wow. . that was two weeks into that job: approximately ten weeks before I got laid off.

I actually am very interested in this, too, but I can't deal with all the noise in those old threads. I keep kind of a list in my head of what people do, because it's fascinating.

I never posted in any of those threads, but here's my contribution:

I travel the world to study infectious disease. No, really, it's what I do.

This is OT, but related to the question of "What do you do for a living?":

A friend of mine (U.S. native) used to work at CNN's Hong Kong Bureau, which was pretty large up to and around the time of the handover of HK back to the Chinese gov't. On one of her days off she wanted to take a day trip to the mainland, and had to apply for some kind of temporary visa to go in. She was rejected and told she wouldn't be allowed into the country, and she assumed it was because she'd listed her occupation as "journalist."

So in a week she tried it again, this time listing her occupation as "greeting card salesman." They let her in.

I'm a grad student by day, a translator by night. And sometimes the other way around. And not a MeFite.

I could've sworn I posted in something like that, but then again, I might not have.

At any rate, I'm currently a library assistant with Johns Hopkins at APL. I basically do nothing but run a photocopier and shelve books/microform. All day. For 32 hours a week. I love my job.

'm a sophomore in college. no job to speak of, although i am occasionally paid to do competitive high school and college debate related activities.

my life dream is to (1) drop out of school (2) be on girls gone wild and, (3)to have my baby.

Ooh, my sister in law works at APL, sperose. yes, I know lots of people do, and no, I don't expect you to know her.

I'm a neuroscientist, currently in post-doc hell.
posted by gaspode 28 January | 17:24
gaspode, it's kinda funny. We're located at APL officially, but if we call them to tell them the damn power went out again or that the alarm went off because someone breathed too hard, they forget who we are. It's hilarious, at times.
posted by sperose 28 January | 18:18
carabiner: That sounds either really fascinating or really depressing.
posted by dismas 28 January | 18:18
dismas: You're right, both scenarios are correct - it depends on the day and what I'm exactly doing. the only true downfall is that I can't easily cross international borders anymore.
