AskMecha: who does this animated gif represent? Does anyone know where this animated gif is from and who it represents? I stole it from somewhere to use as an avatar but have no idea what it is.

It feels like something from a Lost easter egg, or an old Russian movie.

There was a guy in the 19th century that was interested in nerves, muscles and facial expressions. He used electrodes to stimulate individual muscles in the face to see what effect they had. Photographs were made. Those seem to be what the frames of the animation contain. (possibly remembering this wrong, and unable to devise a quick search to find it)
