Radio Mecha - Music Box: Bobby Hutcherson Here I am, on the Radio Mecha, playing some '60s and '70s jazz. There's a wide variety of bandleaders and styles, but every song features my favorite vibraphonist, Bobby Hutcherson. Please listen, if you're so inclined.

This is Hutcherson's 'Dialogue,' from the album of the same name. It's some of that Blue Note in/out postbop/avant-garde. Sam Rivers, Andrew Hill and Paul Chambers are among the players.

A minute ago, jazz guitar great Grant Green's 'Jean La Fleur,' from Idle Moments, with Duke Pearson and Joe Henderson also playing on the track.

Now, pianist Andrew Hill's 'Flea Flop,' from Judgment!, a hornless quartet, with Elvin Jones and Richard Davis playing drums and bass.

This is Eric Dolphy's tribute to Thelonious Monk, 'Hat and Beard.' Freddie Hubbard and Richard Davis make another appearance, and Tony Williams plays drums. This is from 1964's Out to Lunch, my favorite Dolphy album.

Right before this song, it was Big John Patton, Hammond B3 soul-jazz organist, in another hornless quartet, with Grant Green, and Otis Finch playing drums. 'Latona.' It's kinda salsaish.

And this is Hutcherson's Brazilian-sounding 'Subtle Neptune,' from Oblique. It's--imagine that--another hornless quartet, with Herbie Hancock among the players.

Ah, some horn players. It's about damn time. Prince Lasha (pronounced la-SHAY) and Sonny Simmons, two Ornette Coleman-influenced free jazz players, recorded 'The Loved Ones' in a quintet with Hutcherson, Buster Williams and Charles Moffett.

And this song, 'Gingerbread, Gingerbread Boy,' is from Archie Shepp's 1965 Newport Jazz Festival performance. It's a bonus track on the Coltrane/Shepp New Thing At Newport CD reissue.

We just heard Hutcherson's own 'Little B's Poem,' from his 1977 Knucklebean album. And this song is the Platters, 'Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight,' and so no more Bobby Hutcherson (for the time being anyway). Thanks for listening, I hope you enjoyed it, and goodnight.

Bobby Hutcherson - Dialogue
Grant Green - Jean La Fleur
Andrew Hill - Flea Flop
Eric Dolphy - Hat and Beard
Big John Patton - Latona
Bobby Hutcherson- Subtle Neptune
Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons - The Loved Ones
Archie Shepp - Gingerbread, Gingerbread Man
Bobby Hutcherson - Little B's Poem
