I am most thoroughly, indubitably nerdy Herein I discuss wardriving on the bus with my iPod Touch.[More:]

The iPod Touch has a powerful wifi receiver and can detect networks quickly and at a great distance, even on a moving bus. What's more, the Touch remembers networks it's visited before and connects even more quickly.

The upshot is there are several points on my daily bus route where I can upload and download email at a red light or a bus stop.

Some of the wireless has a standard name; some are personalised. The wireless points are everywhere. Four out of five are locked at any given point.

Even the poorest of neighbourhoods has wireless internet, which is great. Other digital knowledge is turning up. Digital cameras, mobile phones and used computers, recycled at thrift shops and small computer stores, are the cause (along with pirated software and folk wisdom).

The charity shop that I run is one of the few in the area that sells electronic goods, and I really enjoy explaining them to people and helping them determine if the goods are right for them.
hm. BtGoG, that's one of the most compelling arguments for an iPod Touch I've seen yet.

and also muy props, somehow the verb 'wardrive' had escaped my radar. Yay urbandictionary!

I think it's awesome that you do techno-gadgetry consultation at your charity shop.

I'm always dubious about using mail reading on open wireless networks with my iPhone because I don't know if the IMAP password is unencrypted or not. Anyone know what the situation is here?

A standard IMAP password is completely unencrypted. You need to go to Account Settings > Advanced and switch on SSL, assuming your provider supports it. That'll also encrypt the emails themselves.

I always try and do this with my laptop on the train when we pull into a station, and it never ever works. Thankfully when National Express took over the WCML, they made wifi free.

If the ipod touch had an SD card slot and the native ability to do ssh tunneling I'd be all over it.
