Everybody Sings About the Weather (part 1) A Very Special Wendellsday Night Radio begins at 6PM Pacific Time, 9PM Eastern, 2AM GMT. It starts with snow music but quickly moves to the rain, because It Never Snows in Southern California.
yeah, I'm announcing it early, but I'd like some audience this time
On it like a mouse on rice.

wendell, how long are you playing it for? I will try to tune in for a while.

The official MetaChat timeslot upper limit is two hours, so I'll be on 'til 8PM Pacific. But I do have nearly 4 hours of snow, rain and sun, and I'm not through putting it all together, so this will be Part 1 or 2 or 3...

I haven't done much to get the word out, but I think we're experimenting with raising the official timeslot upper limit to three hours.

(Also, ooh, ooh, the show's about to start. Imagine me saying 'ooh ooh' like Joe E. Ross.)

I was hoping to include some cute retro drop-ins between songs, but I had to extract short bits out of a long video file here, and after a couple Regularly Scheduled Technical Difficulties, I didn't have the time to do it. Oh, well, maybe next week during "Everybody Sings About the Weather, Part 2".

Show's on... and, by the way, not everyone is singing, there are a couple instrumental pieces and a spoken word bit...

I think it's in P.J. O'Rourke's memoir of his hippie years that he mentions working for an 'underground' alt-weekly that decided to have an actual Weatherman doing a weather column. As I recall, the guy wore a mask, and said things like 'There's a shitstorm brewin'.'

Also, I love that tears-as-rain metaphor. I wonder if there are enough songs to work up a playlist along those lines.

Fats Domino - Ain't That A Shame
The Everly Brothers - Cryin' In The Rain
Slim Harpo - Rainin' In My Heart
The Temptations - I Wish It Would Rain
Dee Clark - Raindrops

Well, it's a start, anyway.

On preview: holy crap, wendell's playing that Everly Brothers song!

And I played the Dee Clark song too... and would've done the Temptations too, but the file was fubar'ed.
posted by wendell 23 January | 22:12
Yeah, but I only included the Dee Clark song because you were playing it. I don't think I've ever heard of Dee Clark.

(I feel like there are still some more examples, though. Also, remind me to send you that Temptations song sometime.)

wendell thanks for the radio! A thought about drumming up audience--I sometimes don't notice the radio posts until after the show goes dark. Maybe something to give them a touch more prominence? Another color maybe? (Yes I know I should just look at the radio thingy in the right sidebar. I'm lazy and ADD like that.)

"fubar'ed". It sounds right, but FUBAR is a fine word on its own. Isn't it ok just to say, "the file was fubar"? Sorry to be pedantic but it caught my eye.
