NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Heath Ledger is DEAD???
We just heard that news in my office! When my co-worker said it, I couldn't believe it, but TMZ and CNN are reporting it! Sad, especially for ≡ Click to see image ≡.

holy shit. That's so awful.

Authorities are on the lookout for a "large bat-like creature" seen leaving the scene.

AP report:

By TOM HAYS Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - January 22, 2008 -- Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence in a possible drug-related death, police said. He was 28.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let Ledger know the masseuse was there found him dead at 3:26 p.m.

The Australian-born actor was an Oscar nominee for his role in "Brokeback Mountain" and has numerous other screen credits.

And people wonder why newspapers have to keep obituaries on file.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 22 January | 16:58
I know! He died an hour ago.
posted by iconomy 22 January | 16:59
Holy crap.

Meanwhile, Wikipedia already has the news. I'm beginning to think that Wikipedia either kills people, or predicts death. Either way, I think I'll avoid my listing from now on.

Oh wait, I don't have one.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 22 January | 17:01
Wow, he was found next door to mr. gaspode's old apartment on Broome St.
posted by gaspode 22 January | 17:02
Only 28. Damn!

He was surprisingly good in Brokeback Mountain.

Perez Hilton is saying that an Olsen twin was with him, which is impossible, because if it were an Olsen twin, it would have been MK (the wild one!), and she's in Sundance.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 22 January | 17:02
Meanwhile, why was Casamova retitled "Femur" in The Philippines?
posted by Ambrosia Voyeur 22 January | 17:03
Ooo, sources at "The Insider" (I have sources, heck yea!) say MK Olsen left Sundance yesterday. DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNN!!
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 22 January | 17:05
Wow, they don't mess around on Wikipedia
posted by TheDonF 22 January | 17:06
Weird...him and Brad Renfro in a short amount of time. Is it me, or has it been awhile since some young actor types died?
posted by richat 22 January | 17:13
TPS: The NYTimes is merely reporting that he was found in an apartment owned by MK Olsen.
posted by crush-onastick 22 January | 17:13
Fuck...The Dark Knight, I'm Not There, Brokeback Mountain he was really starting to get good. He was right in the middle of a new Terry Gilliam movie...this makes Terry Gilliam the most cursed director in history.
posted by oh pollo! 22 January | 17:16
damn, somebody put a big wang on that Wiki page.
posted by Hellbient 22 January | 17:17
She's a tiny trillionaire. She probably owns half the city. Doesn't mean she was there, or even knew him. May have just rented him the apartment.

Me: "Heath Ledger has just been found dead!"
Kid Brother: "Nooooooooooo....why couldn't it be Josh Hartnet"
posted by oh pollo! 22 January | 17:22
WTF?!

Wow. What. The. Fuck. Serious. If it weren't for MetaChat and Metafilter, I would never find anything out.
posted by SassHat 22 January | 17:42
This makes me sad. He's in my official favourite film ever.

And you can take Josh Hartnett over my cold, dead Freddie Prinze Jr.
posted by cillit bang 22 January | 17:46
WHAT!!!

I had a serious mega-crush on him for, oh, two or three months after A Knight's Tale (...and I'm seriously showing my youth here).

Also, is it sad that my first thought was "how will this affect The Dark Knight?"
posted by muddgirl 22 January | 17:55
I feel like someone punched me in the chest - I'm totally stunned. Don't take that the wrong way, I'm not overwrought or anything. It's just that he's not one you would expect to die so young.

His poor family, especially his daughter.
posted by deborah 22 January | 17:56
What a shame.
posted by msali 22 January | 18:03
I was only familiar with him re the Knight's Tale movie (we have it on video)...but this is just messed up.

None of us is guaranteed our next breath, though...I guess this is our cosmic reminder.
posted by bunnyfire 22 January | 18:09
Oh, that is such a shame. I have been watching the news. Poor guy. Poor Michelle. How is she going to explain to that baby that daddy isn't coming back? He had such a talent.
posted by redvixen 22 January | 18:14
I immediately thought of Kurt Cobain: a year younger than Ledger at the time of his suicide, with a 2-year-old daughter as well. Another sad, pointless death of a talented young man.
posted by scody 22 January | 18:39
wow. yea, scody, agreed. tho I never dug Nirvana, I respected their importance all the same

and: woah, TPS got scooped on a celeb news thread? That, coupled with the current stock market issues, has me pretty much convinced that the end is indeed at hand.

yea I saw this on Wikipedia before I saw the MeCha post. Wikipedia is freaking spooky, that's what. Brrrr.

and that's three! (Bobby Fischer and Suzanne Pleshette were 1 and 2 respectively)

Whoah. Poor guy. His poor daughter and family.
posted by gomichild 22 January | 19:45
4 if you count Brad Renfro.
posted by chewatadistance 22 January | 20:15
I'm surprised and saddened. He always seemed older than his years - I would have guessed he was at least 32, and didn't seeem the type to check out young. He could have had a very long career. Hollywood is a Bitch. He's impressed me since "Ten Things I Hate About You."

I just saw TrishaLynn on the news saying a few words about Ledger's death. It was our local news but they were borrowing a feed from NBC.
posted by deborah 22 January | 21:45
Wait, what?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 22 January | 22:09
Where has TrishaLynn been lately, anyhow?

I'm about 99% sure that it was her. Maybe someone can email her to confirm.
posted by deborah 22 January | 23:13
I guess we'll never get Roar back on the air.
posted by Eideteker 23 January | 07:50
Um, yes that was me. I've been swallowed up by convention planning (it's Katsucon time again), and since DumbCo was a mile from the site, I went there after work.

Apparently, I was also on CNN's "American Morning" too.
posted by TrishaLynn 23 January | 16:15
Man, I'm stunned. So young and so talented.

Two Hands is my favourite film of his, although not as significant as Brokeback Mountain.

I see Fred Thompson just dropped out of the race || Something really special for ThePinkSuperhero
