Cate Blanchett is nominated for Elizabeth II AND her supporting role as Bob Dylan? Were we really so hard up for nominees, considering that Elizabeth II was by all accounts a steaming pile?

And the girl from Juno? Really?? I haven't seen it yet, but is that movie really best picture/best actor worthy?

And I'm not the hugest Tim Burton fan anymore, but his exclusion from the director category is a joke.

These are all things I care about before 10:00 AM.

I'm amazed Atonement got so many nominations. I don't see it winning any of the biggies though.

It was Elizabeth I, no? (I noticed because, being Scottish, numbering of Elizabeths is a contentious subject).

The MOVIE is Elizabeth II. As in, the sequel :)

Ah. I should get out more.

I came away from Juno thinking Ellen Page deserved a nomination, but I'm sure I'm the minority in thinking that. And after a few weeks of pondering it I'm a little less eager to defend her nomination now, but it does make me happy. I don't really think the movie itself deserved a Best Picture nomination though, as much as I liked it.

Yes, finally! They nominate a film for Best Picture that I've actually seen. This has to be the first one I've seen in....many years. That can't be a good sign.

Perespolis should have been a best picture nominee.

Wow, I can't remember the last time I'd seen a Best-Picture nominee, either, TPS. (In my case it's NCFOM)

Actually, I checked the Wikipedia- I saw Little Miss Sunshine in 2006, Lord of the Rings in 2003, and Chicago in 2002.

Ah... the last time I saw one before it was nominated was 2000, with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

I hope There Will Be Blood and Daniel Day Lewis take the big ones.

The most confident prediction I can make is Daniel Day-Lewis winning actor.

Of the picture categories, I've only seen There will be blood and No country for old men, and although I liked them both a lot, I liked the latter better.

I completely agree as soon as I heard the nominations for best actress I was thinking, "Is this really the best we can do?" I thought Sweeney Todd was terrific definitely deserving of a best director nomination. I also thought that Pollack might have got a nomination for "before the devil knows your dead".

On the converse, I think this is the first time in a long time that I have seen so few of the nominated movies (in any category).

I was interested in most of em but I guess I just didn't get out much. :(

Ellen Page is Oscar-bait, no doubt. She really was as good as any of the other nominees. Laura Linney phoned it in. The Savages was a big disappointment for me. Also Oscar bait, but the bad kind.

I'm smarting over no Gosling for Lars. GOOOOSSSSLIIING!

I don't think Burton deserves one for Sweeney Todd, though the film was great, his input wasn't really extraordinary, and the recycling he did was so, so evident. But neither does Reitman. Pedestrian. Cronenberg should have had it.

I also thought that Pollack might have got a nomination for "before the devil knows your dead".

I don't know about Pollack*, but I think Hoffman could've nabbed another supporting actor nomination with his role in that movie. I didn't see the Savages yet, but Hoffman really had a great year--his performance in Charlie Wilson's War should win for sure.

*I only say this because I thought the movie was so-so. I can't say I'm savvy enough to detect good directing in a movie I thought was just okay, so I guess I pretty much conflate the Best Director and Best Picture awards.

I hate awards shows. It's nothing but an excuse for the wealthy, priviliged and egomanaical to get together and fellate eachother, and we line up to watch. I also think there are too many of them and that there will eventually be an Awards Show Awards with Joan Rivers and her mutant daughter hovering outside.

(I haven't seen a movie in the theater since before the turn of the millenium, so I can't comment on any of the movies themselves)

I love awards shows. You might see a terrible production number, a ridiculous collaboration or an incoherent speech delivered by an idiot. Or a drunk, or a drunk idiot. Somebody, at some point during the awards show, is going to be geniunely surprised and grateful and happy. And I like to see that stuff. There's a pretty good chance you'll see someone and say either 'I didn't know she was alive' or 'I didn't know he was dead.' And, maybe most of all, awards shows are often aired live, and so you never know--somebody might say 'fuck,' or have their pants fall off or something, on national teevee.

Dude, I can go to any number of bars and see that. Half the time, I'm the drunken idiot giving the incoherent speech. If you'd like to take up two hours of TV time that would be better served broadcasting sports or old sitcom reruns to show the world, be my guest.

I hope Sarah Polley wins for Adapted Screenplay, but that's only girlcrush bias. I haven't seen ANYTHING. Like the Golden Globes, might The Oscars just not happen?

jonmc, Oscar Pools warm one up nicely for the NCAA pools. Plus - fashion! But yeah, I get bored after an hour unless I'm at a party.

I gave up on awards shows a long time ago. My definition of "best" does not generally match theirs. Plus the gawd-awful production numbers that WILL NOT END.
posted by bmarkey 22 January | 20:43
Just because we're talking about the Oscars here doesn't mean we're talking about the actual show. I also rarely watch it.
posted by Hellbient 22 January | 21:16
I always watch it, and I don't know why- it's always really long, really boring, and composed of stuff about movies I haven't seen. I must be a glutten for punishment, because I cannot quit awards shows, no matter how boring.

Wishlist:

No country for old men gets crushed. At most 3 oscars, none relevant (though I'm fairly sure Barden will end up getting supporting actor).
Daniel Day Lewis gets best actor (really, is there even competition here?)
Juno grabs at least a couple statuettes.
Sweeney Todd gets costume or art direction.
