A song for MLK day, which is being observed in the U.S. today: U2's "Pride (In The Name Of Love)". Crank it![More:] Also, live concert footage of U2 playing this song, back in 1984.

I saw U2 when they played here in Atlanta on this tour, and I still remember it as one of my best concert experiences ever. The fact that the arena they were playing was just blocks from Auburn Avenue and Ebenezer Baptist Church seemed to really electrify the band- I remember at the time being amazed that four guys could sound so POWERFUL in a huge echoing arena.
that entire album (along with the "wide awake in america" ep) is the "frozen in amber" moment that i choose to remember u2 by. they've come close a couple of times, but in my mind they haven't topped it yet. awesome.

I agree with you there, syntax. Achtung, Baby was a close second, but it's also kind of like apples and oranges to this album.

Nouvelle Vague's recording of same.

Heh! That's cool, crush. (The only other NV track I've heard is a similar cover of the Clash's "Guns Of Brixton." Have they done many of these?)

Answering my own question: Wikipedia says yes, they have.

I love U2. Great choice, BP! They were on my list of the four great arena acts of the 80s I had to see at least once - Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson and U2. I saw the Zoo TV show in 1993, awesome for the sheer ingenuity of it all, but would have loved to have seen the show you saw or the Joshua Tree tour for the music.

I finished the list with front-row Prince last August. He didn't play 'When Doves Cry' grrr but it was otherwise fab.

Just to say, the Martin Luther King, jr. wakes up episode of Boondocks was the most apt thing i'd seen all day.
