Ivory tablecloths. White placecards, or cream placecards? I feel there's an actual answer to this.
White placecards will make your ivory tablecloth look dirty.

Holograms.

It's an older audience. Holograms might kill them.

Cream placecards won't match your ivory tablecloth exactly.

Yeah, see, these two thoughts have been bouncing back and forth in my head for the past half-hour.

The room itself is more earthy tones, with a kind of brick red accent. Which is making me lean slightly toward cream. I think?

Sigh. It's just that it's going to be the kind of crowd that would notice, so I'm worried about it looking wrong.

If white and cream are the only two options, then go with cream.

For progress. The sacrifice is worth it.

Are white and cream your only two choices?

If so I think I would go with cream. Don't worry about an exact match.

I agree with amro on this. I would try very, very hard for an offset color like light blue or green, something to match the plates.

Are they printed? Can you choose something with a subtle border that'll match or harmonize with something else in the decor?

I'm printing them at work, so they need to be laser-printer compatible. And I'm buying them at the big-box office supply place, so they need to be available there.

They don't have to be super-fancy or elegant -- it's more of a business lunch sort of thing than a formal dinner sort of thing -- I'm just antsy about it.

And it turns out that the cream-colored ones I was going to get are back ordered, so I'll be heading out to the stationery store to see if they have any additional options...

(And I'm a little worried about going with a color, because the caterer is doing all the napkins and flowers and I don't know what color he's using for those.)

Cream placecards sound delicious.

Call the caterer and ask them what the color scheme is. Tell them why you're asking. They have experience with this sort of thing are are likely to be helpful.

great suggestion, amro.

White will stand out against the ivory; i don't think it will make ivory look dirty. They might as well highlight the name or nice text.

Either is fine. Throw in a different criteria to choose, price or recycled or some such.

Thank you for all your suggestions, especially the recommendation to contact the caterer. The caterer has recommended cream (and objected to white), so cream it will be. Huzzah!

And in the meantime, I've found out that my boss wants me to calligraph the place cards.

I have not done calligraphy since about 1996.

Yikes.

Calligraph them - in good old Nazi Fraktur. That'll teach them to make unreasonable demands.
posted by ikkyu2 15 January | 00:38
Well, really, that'll teach me to brag about knowing how to do calligraphy.

I started them this afternoon. They actually look reasonably decent. I'm very proud of myself.
