So, can I go in there or what?

Damn, what goes on in there? Now I really wanna know.

The sign says 'restroom', even though the male and female symbols make it clear what the room is for. What a waste of ink.

There's a place here where signs on the ladies room stall doors "One Person Per Stall NO EXCEPTIONS Thank you." It is in the sort of establishment where one imagines some confusion and a penchant for hijinks would be likely to arise from time to time.

I saw that sign on a mensroom door in a bar once and realized what kind of bar I was in and why everyone was so...friendly.

"One Person Per Stall NO EXCEPTIONS"

So, you can't leave until someone else shows up.

And it's apparently cool to hang out in there with your dog.

Hm...

Usually if one gender's line is big and the other room is free, people will just use them interchangeably. Not so much in bars, but in private parties I've seen this happen a lot. It's always funny, because every time some guy sees a girl leaving a stall, the gut reaction is always to half-expect someone else to be inside that stall. You see the guys always taking a little while to venture in.

Or perhaps, "Women" is regulatory, whereas "No men in this bathroom" is just informative, so, you know, you feel safer knowing there's no men hiding in that bathroom.

Is it some sort of anti-transgender measure? Is that an issue that's being batted around in the area?

occhiblu- that was my first thought, too.

well, I don't know that that particular area is dealing with that issue...it's just off I-40 between Fayetteville and Raleigh-it's an exit that has all the usual chain restaurants, etc.

Hee, I know.

well, I don't know that that particular area is dealing with that issue..

Huh. I feel like there was some big controversy recently about legislation designed either to allow transgendered people to use the restroom of their preferred gender, or barring them from doing so... I assume if you haven't heard anything about it out there, then that's probably not what the sign's about!

Besides, I actually USED that bathroom myself-it's a one-seater-so I honestly don't think anyone would care that much if a transgender individual used it. It's not like most clerks can tell the difference, if the crossdresser is any good at it to begin with.

Oh man...I laughed so hard. I'm picturing some poor shlep waiting endlessly for someone to show up so he can go home.

Yeah, it's a gay bar.

Boy, somebody really gets their panties in a twist if the seat gets left up, huh?

j/k

Actually, I was reminded of one of my favorite Charles Addams cartoons ever. It probably ran in the New Yorker, but isn't on CartoonBank, natch.

Anyway, a guy has just opened a door prominently marked "MEN". Inside, the place is packed like sardines with a number of calmly standing, outwardly-facing ... men.

OK, it's better when it's drawn by Charles Addams. Trust me.
