At the time, it seemed pretty innocent . . . but in retrospect, this ad for Pakistan Airlines was not a great idea.
Holy shit.

Copyranter's run a few of these over the last couple of days.

This one is particularly appalling.

I think it was a GREAT idea. The World Trade Center was what, two years old at the time? Most Americans still hated it because it was too "modern." I think it's interesting that another country (at least, according to this ad agency) already saw the WTC as a symbol of America, even when most Americans didn't.

Thinking about it sans terrorism, it reminds me of Jacques Tati's Playtime, where you only see the landmarks of Paris reflected in shop windows. This is the reverse of that- you see the landmark, and the tourists (people seeing the ad, in other words) are implied. That's what makes it a brilliant ad, to me.

Big discussion about this ad on my site as well (self-pimping!) on this ad, where members are adding other old ads to the mix and some wacky conspiracy theorist seems to think that ads predict the future... If that were the case then why can't I shop like in that AT&T advert from nineties yet?? (quicktime, access for metachatters). (from banner ads tenth birthday)

i remember seeing that ad and appreciating it then.
i was thinking of surfing your site, dabs, for more use of spanking in ads.
This one just kills me: Blow smoke in her face, you poseur! She'll love it!

Oh yeah, that smoke ad. Infamous. Which reminds me, I must post my collection of Movie Stars shilling alcohol and tobacco.

Wikipedia says that the towers opened in '72 and '73, so six-seven years old.
