Project Runway recap (Spoilers) but it's been two days →[More:] Sweat Pea was robbed, although I did like Victoria's dress. I also like'd Chris'.
I thought the right person went, although I am sort of - a bit - non-pro Christian.
Fuck Christian. Horrible idea, horrible color, horrible fit, and on top of it all, he blamed everything on his 17 year old client! We were stunned they didn't boot him. Ridiculous.
I love Chris. He reminds me of a good friend of mine, and his online portfolio is kickass.
He was so robbed. That dress was unique and stunning, I bet that girl was the star of her prom.
I thought Victoria's dress was more Forever 21 or Deb than anything else. The bedazzler thing doesn't do it for me, and that neckline wasn't flattering on the model. Maybe it looked better in person, to me it looked very mass-market and kind of tacky.
also, christian's a little scum for throwing a high school kid under the train like that. and christ on a crutch, I know he's used to sewing for skinny models, but he should have realized a gal with some meat to her would need a skirt cut longer in the back. damn. he's a total one trick pony, anyways. he can make anything as long as it's black, runched, and with a 21 inch waist.
Kevin should have listened to Tim about that hem...
I like Chris but most of his stuff is MOB or beauty pageant. He definitely learns from his mistakes though, and has stopped with the tacky and is stepping up in terms of sophistication. I wouldn't be surprised if he made it to the final three.
Cannot stand Christian. Also do not like Vyktoria (mean) or Sweet P (total airhead). Jillian still hasn't registered with me. I like Kit's stuff.
Rickey must go.
This is the weakest season yet. None of the designers stand out as being anything more than hacks, except the tall guy whose name escapes me....Rami or something. And possibly Kit.
Rami is good... his dress was panned by the judges for being "too old" for the model, but it was flawless in terms of construction.
Christ, for one episode where Rickey doesn't fucking cry... someone steal his hat!
Rami is head of the class, and I think Jillian has nailed some of the challenges. Chris has had a very good last two weeks.
I really don't like Christian either, but I didn't know how widespread the sentiment was, so I started out treading lightly.
Victoria's model really seemed to like her dress - plus she was tall and thin and had personality. On a different girl it wouldn't have worked. I'm shocked that she won it.
I like Sweetpea. I don't think she's airheaded at all, and her dress was gorgeous this week. The only reason Christian didn't go home is because he's such a drama queen.
I'm really annoyed by the judges' randomness. One week they're pissed at Chris because "it's so costumey" and the next they're mad because it isn't.
Kevin being dropped is another example of them losing someone not because of a lack of skills but because they just didn't make exciting t.v. Kevin had created a string of nice work, but was dropped for one mis-step, while Ricky doesn't have the positive track record, created a horrid dress and got to stay.
I'm also convinced that none of the judges have ever been to a prom, as the "she looks to old/sophisticated/etc," showed a complete lack of prom understanding.
I was sorry to see Kevin go because he looks like the bastard love child of General Zod and Joey Fatone and my husband and I were having fun making Zod Joins a Boy Band jokes.
We can still make Right Said Fred jokes about Rami,I guess, but we've pretty much exhausted all the things he's too sexy for.
Ugh, Christian *rolls eyes*. Christian has got to go. He's an undeservedly arrogant one-trick pony who annoys the hell out of me. I liked Sweet P's dress, and Chris's was lovely. But no one really stands out as consistently good, and I'm overall unimpressed with the designers this season. Blah. I think they've run out of good candidates...
Honestly, in my mind, Christian's work was the worst. Unfinished hem, whatever... to me, that skirt going up 5" in the back was as unforgiveable as that trainwreck shirt SweetPea sent down the runway in menswear. A skirt for someone over a size 6 will need to be longer in back to accomidate an ass. Basic sewing knowelege. Right up there with "the sleeves should be of the same length and extend from the shoulders."
I'm far more forgiving of things being too MOB, or campy, or just plain running out of time than I am of shitty construction that would have been shitty if they were given a week longer.
Christian might be annoying but he's not boring. Being MOB (a.k.a. old) and boring is exactly what you don't want to be, only to be trumped by clueless, tasteless and ugly.
Designers should know how to make the garments because it informs the designing, but i wonder if being really focused on the craft is what causes so much myopia in the collections. When it comes to making a whole collection, a lot of the time it looks like they can't see the big picture or get too caught up in details and lose objectivity and perspective. i don't think most designers are Balenciaga; i think most of them work with pattern makers who realize the drawings for or with them. Working in isolation only works in certain situations.
i don't know if i want to see any of them do a collection.
i'm kinda glad this season hasn't been as great because i can't watch it and keep up.
BUT
Ricky's gotta go and VictorYa bugs me. i think we all want to see Chris whip the win out of his ass, but sadly i "don't think the taste level is there."
Rami is good but he bores me. i really want one of the girls to impress me.
Victoryyyyyyyyyyyya's winning dress is a rip-off.
heh.
(and honestly, I think Chris has amazingly subdued and classic taste when one takes his being an actual literal drag queen into account. my queen friends would be sending everyone down in feathers, sequins, and assless chaps. which doesn't negate some of the crazy Joan Crawford on acid shit he's sent out there, but it does explain it.)
In regards to the judging... The "Chris trap" in the candy episode was certainly its low-point and really exposed how big a sham it is (if you didn't accept it already). IF HE HAD SENT SOMEONE DOWN IN A RIDICULOUS PARADE FLOAT YOU WOULD HAVE VOTED HIM OFF YOU BITCHES! Wait for next week when they get on somebody for finishing their hem "This was a challenge that we really gave you an opportunity to not finish your outfit... we're disappointed."
I am about to super nerd this up:
I'm a fan of Jillian as the dark horse; she's been fairly consistent throughout and she's been taking bigger risks with success lately. She's pulling herself out of the pack and just needs a big score in one of the next couple challenges to make it through.
Kit's in a similar boat but has been staying conservative. Once the challenges let the designers unfurl a bit again, I think she's got talent/voice enough to separate. But she's going to need somebody to crash and burn.
While he's starting to bank on his experience, Chris is stuck because every week is a Chris trap. He's going to get burned for doing exactly what he thinks the judges want him to do. His stuff has been sharp lately, but I'm not sure he can hit the in-between of what he's doing now and his strengths as a costume designer... That's what they're looking for.
Rami is the craftsman of the bunch. And that ability is letting him do a lot more than the other designers. He's a safe bet for the final three.
There's no upside to Sweet P in the long run. I feel like we've seen what she can do in this competition. She may hang on for a bit longer, but there's been no glimpse of an ability to separate herself.
I think Ricky is an awesome drawer. (He's improving drastically, but like Sweet P - I just don't think this is his thing.)
As far as Victorya... I dunno. Again, middle of the pack. No flash that signals she can get out of it. #2 in annoying only to........
Christian. One. Trick. Pony. Zero vision beyond what he does, even if he does it well. He just cost him self a lot of points too. (I think they were going to Top 3 his outfit until the discussion... No?) But they've labeled him as a prodigy. And that label overcomes a lot.
My picks for the final three, then... Christian, Rami, Jillian.
Of course, the way the judging is going, it only takes one slip to be out, so I'm not betting the house (which I do not own) on it. I'll buffer it by saying that Kit or Chris can move in, but that's dependent on both a killer design from one of them and a major flop by one of the top three.
Hi supernerd! I agree that Rami and Jillian are almost locks for the final two. The last spot isn't emerging yet, but I'm rooting for Chris, based on the last two weeks, and his Dramatik Comebak story appeal.
Honestly, if it is a sham I think Chris has a better chance. Everyone LOVES him. Even the other contestants (see how they reacted to his shock return?).
Honestly, I thought Jillian should have been disqualified in the making outfits for women who lost weight episode, and I've had a grudge ever since.
Rami isn't flashy, but he does good work. And he understands anatomy, which is more than can be said for some of the others. Eth, I know you were talking about design vs. actual construction, but IMO it's all tied in. A great drawing, done to the scale of a size 0, will not work even if the worlds' best pattern drafter tries to make it a 16, or even a 10. Anyone who can sew can make a dress that will rock on a six foot tall size 2. Going beyond that is the real test of skill. (alhough, IMO, they should really bring in adjustable forms when they do these real-woman challenges, so the designers can at least drape on the proper size base.)
Victorya seems to hate boobs. She always binds them down or covers them with a drape or something. I don't know why. Antiboob. I don't get it. The collaberative project, when Ricky went to tweak the bustline of the dress she was working on, and boom, it was a million times better.
Adjusting forms is a pain in and up whatever is biggest.
i got these two (accidental ebay i didn't have time to adjust) dress forms that have size two to zeros waists and padding them has been a nightmare, not even talking about my own ever changing moods (yes, a Jam ref).
Designing for a form that doesn't hang like a hanger is a whole different story.
If they would ever take teams, i want to be part of Team Kelly, but i know from fashion majors the inside is suppose to be the prettiest part and i've never even had real time on a machine.
Someone who can design fabulously for a plus size can design well on any size and would be a clear front runner no matter what, but plus size is plus 4 at most, and anyone who is a good craftsman can find a great job from this show.
Optimally, who should win is a visionary who is a capable and together person. And i agree.
To paraphrase PRC, anyone can make a nice dress, who's gonna make something new?
Oh, and i think Victorya is trying to use form and volume differently but i think she's a too controlled and not openly creative to what i'd want to see, which is ultimately creativity and something new.
i have tremendous respect for craft, but we have lots of history to teach that.
They want new designer, not a flag bearer. And so do i, because history has many people who can do well, acclaimed or not.
i ive and take great respect for people who respect craft.
New ideas are really a whole different animal.
Being between those ideals will tear us apart.
i feel so goth i wish i had bleach and dye.
i'd really show those Japs what style was about.
Heh.
Since we're blarbling, I'd like to mention that The Husband and I share only two things on our limited TV schedules - NFL Football and Project Runway. He's a set and lights designer, and we've both worked with costume designers, and you just have to love Heidi and Tim.
Heidi looked especially beautiful last episode, nay?
Heidi still registers with me as pregnant. It's weird. Every episode I will look and be surprised that she's not.
Too bad I've been deleting episodes as the gf watches them, it would be interesting to see how Victorya picks models based on bust-size available.
Jillian's ex-fattie dress irked me a bit as well, but I have a faux crush on her so I am obligated to be pro-her both analytically and emotionally. She is a terrible draw-er though, which I was very disappointed about.
I have two seasons of PRC on their way... T-minus sometime Monday. (Will I get banned if I ask about a faster t-rent club?)
Santino had the ultimate designer temperament. That's why we love the show, the effing temperaments of the behind the scenes creative types. I mean, we KNEW Santinos. I guess this season is a bit lacking in personalities/temperaments. And that's why they are keeping Christian around. I want my MommyLaura.
We may all have to adjourn to irc to duke this out.
And i'd rather be frank and blunt about this than US election crap right now-- heh!
See you all there in less than thirty
with special BP approved freebies and secret prizes!
Smoke 'em if you got 'em
smoke if you can--
You told me to bitch at you, bitch!
That's being in total control, honey--
I think Heidi would look stunning in a burlap sack. ;)
(and I have to play model on Sunday for my portfolio shots... it was postponed last time, and I was told this midweek. It will, apparently, be "in studio, with hair and makeup." vomit time: now.)
Oh, and I'm half a drink to the wind. And working on it.
What did Jillian do in the weight loss episode? Damnit I can't remember it. I only remember that wedding dress to frumpy prude monstrosity from that episode.
I just looked at some photos from that episode and now I remember....did she actually use any fabric from the original outfit? I still don't understand how she didn't get disqualified for that, and now I do recall being pissed off about it, and then consequently totally forgot - Jillian is not a memorable person to me. The judges were probably so blinded by the ugly from Steve's dress that they couldn't think coherently.
