Sure, it's intended to be an American Godzilla (because King Kong is a pansy), but the approach is what could really make it. Between Abrams not wanting to reveal the monster too early and the street-level perspective of it, it could be really unique and captivating.
It's had superb trailers. The earlier one with fewer effects and more hiding trembling in basements was even better. And I'll probably trot along to see it like I do most of the blowing-big-stuff-up effects movies.
But I'm guessing that the actual movie won't live up to it. Firstly it appears to be a pretty standard big-rampaging-monster movie. Secondly with Lost Abrams seems to have shown a great ability to set up puzzles and build tension, but almost no ability to follow through and resolve things in a satisfying way.
(Derail). Also, I saw "I Am Legend" yesterday and I'm miffed at the way they made such a great movie then messed it up with a crappy formulaic ending. Again, they set things up really well with terrific tension, then just didn't follow through.
