Somebody needs to figure out how to encode scent so I can post a sample for you all.

For the past two weeks Mrs Slack has been anxious for me to make French Onion Soup (the one dish I can actually make better than her) tonight. But we just tiled the kitchen floor and didn't finish in time to move the stove back and hook it up, so French Onion soup will have to wait until next week. And now that you mentioned the smell, I'm quite bummed that we're not having tonight. I LOVE that smell.

How did the first person to find an onion react? Peel it and... ah, it goes on. No fruit, it just continues to be peeled. Or worse, eat it, ouch, yuck!

Did they say - hey, nice fruits, lets peel it - and then beginning to peel peel and peeel forever before discovering that the thing indeed peels until forever...Oh dear.

Or, did they say, hey - lets just slice this up into little bits, sautee it with some brandy then perhaps add water, wine, and beef broth and many hours later put cheese on top. I'll be a really good soup!

I mean, jesus, who thought of French food? I love 'em! Crazy b'stards!

lol @ dabitch. I often wonder that about food, either single things like onions or dishes like onion soup. Who decided cooking this like this would make good eating?
