Overheard in the bar where I'm currently working on my laptop: [More:]

The scene: A 20-year-old girl in a lacy tanktop (it's 55 outside) and tight jeans and Ugg boots. She approaches the bar with her gaggle of girl friends. It's 3:30.

The tanktop girl, to the bartender, after ordering a mojito: "Um, I have a final at 6? I probably shouldn't be drinking? Heeheehee! Have you tried the, like, new mojito in the bottle you guys??"

Sometimes I forget that I live in a college town. And upon the reminder, I'm happy to have forgotten.
To be fair, I realize now that she's probably 21.

Did she at least pronounce "mojito" correctly?

I have had drinks before giving a class presentation. Before finals, not so much. Heh.

A final at 6 on a Friday night?

(disclaimer: I mainly went through college stoned, but I drew the line at finals. . those were taken straight.)

Yeah, she pronounced it correctly, but she had the bartender remix it a few times. And yes, I'm drinking a beer while doing my work.

But dammit, she was annoying! And she made me feel old and maternal! And that was her crime!

Sometimes I forget that I live in a college town.

Ha! I was going to say "damn, that sounds a lot like my college..."

I hate Ugg boots. I don't find them to be the least bit appealing or fashionable. Then again, I'm a guy, so maybe I'm missing some subtle nuances.

The nuances are lost on this girl too, cf. So it's not a gender thing. Possibly a taste thing.

But then again, we rule. So, yeah.

Isn't Ugg short for Ugg-ly?

Do I miss living in a college town?

for the record I have steaming piles of loathe for Ugg boots too, but then I've probably expired according to the demographic for Ugg wearers.

for what it's worth they don't wear 'em here in Winter Wonderland because (wait for it) they're horribly un-practical for actual real winter weather - they don't tolerate slush well and aren't very water resistant.

Did she have that horrible whistly "s"?

I read somewhere Uggs were originally used apres-SURF down under.

My eleven year old cousin is jonseing for a pair...I wanted to ask if the kids who were her real friends would care about what she wore.

Uggs are fine, when they don't leave the house. Everybody should have a pair, with a screeching alarm and dye bomb fitted for whenever you set foot outside.

heh Danf! I did the same though never in class - I'd be laughing too hard or forever lost in the train of discussion.

Heh, Pup.

I had a similar thing happen this week when I was walking somewhere to meet Miko and these two 20-something biddies were tottering along in 3-inch deep snow wearing those ridiculous triangle-point stiletto shoes that are considered corporate these days. One girl was wearing a short shirt and her thong was poking up from the top of her pants.

My thoughts weren't "HOTTIES! YEAAAAAAAAH!" but,
"Jesus Christ! Who let you out of the house wearing that? Why don't you put a jacket on? Don't you have snow boots???"

Yes, I am Middle-Aged Man. Fear me.
