What can you not stop buying? [More:]*Cheap shoes. Payless is so dangerous. But I'm trying to ween myself off cheap shoes! 1 pair $80 shoes > 4 pairs $20 shoes.
*Lip gloss. And I use it ALL.
*I go through grocery phases, where everytime I go to the store I think, oh, yea, definitely need some of that. And then I end up with 6 boxes of Jello, and why did I think I needed that much?
Time.

Nail polish. Whiskeys. How many whiskeys does one liquor cabinet need? The answer is "more".

And this winter, I thought it would be sweater dresses, but I am showing more restraint than I had expected.

I buy a lime pretty much every time I'm in the grocery store. Which means that at any one time, I have dozens of limes in various states of dessication in my fruit basket.

It's amazing how small limes can get when they rot.

Guitar equipment. I've got three bids on Ebay at the moment which if I win I'll have to pay for by selling a kidney. I'm never going on Ebay drunk again.

Oh Mudpuppie, LIMES mmmm, when they dessicate put them in a persian stew! Garam Sabsi or some variation of that spelling, anything slow cooking, it's amazing.

Huh. Good to know, Wilder, thanks.

But then what will I use to throw at the squirrels??

I don't buy cheap shoes anymore.
I actually did the math, they cost me about $3 a wearing on average, since the heels always snap for me within a month. It's cheaper for me to shell out an extra $30 or so for something better.

Damn you for even mentioning eBay, oh pollo!- I just had quite the eBay detour. At least I didn't bid on anything!

Oh, and fabric is it for me. I have tons. I buy yardage and never use it for anything. I'm insane.

Last year, I would have said books but after moving 95 boxes of books to our new house, I think that I'm cured.

Books! Can't stop, won't stop, never gonna stop.

Body butter/intensive moisturizers etc. About one in 10 is actually any good, and then it's always too expensive. But I keep hoping, and ending up with tons of barely used not-very-good creams. I need to just stick to the more expensive ones to save money, I guess.

Flowers. Unless we're dirt poor, I can't resist buying flowers. One of my few real extravagances... though I don't really get the luxury models, just your basic mums, carnations, daisies n' stuff.
posted by taz 03 December | 16:58
mudpuppie, I do that too! Limes and jalapeno peppers and paper towels are all things I'm convinced we're constantly in dire need of, so I buy them on every grocery store trip. And dog toys. I keep thinking that I will finally stumble across the perfect dog toy, the toy that keeps Django occupied all day and stops him from eating the couch/my cds/the pillows/my clothes, etc. It never works - he just plays with the toy for a while and then carries it out to lose it in the yard.

Books, always! I have no space for them, but I keep buying 'em. Especially art history and novels. Taz, thanks for the reminder, I haven't bought flowers in awhile. I'm overdue!

The past year or two have pretty much cured me of my habit of buying too much of anything - unless it's something I absolutely need, I generally haven't been able to justify it in the budget.

Hopefully this will stick, because I've finally figured out a way to buy groceries/food in a way that I have a decent stock of non-perishables on hand and keep enough produce and other perishables on hand at any given moment. For a long time I struggled with how to avoid waste, considering how most grocery items seem to come in portions/packages that are just too big for one person. No spoiled food these days, hurrah!

Cheap shoes/clothes would have been mine a couple of years ago. Which I realized was crazy because they often fell apart/didn't fit right/didn't look all that great, etc. Which meant they did nothing but sat in my closet.

CDs.

I think if I started playing my music collection alphabetically, I'd make it to about Y before I died of old age, and yet that '3 for $10' bin at the 2nd hand CD shop on Bourke Street keeps calling out to me.

Also beer, but I'm good with that.

*Magazine subscriptions. I'm a real sucker for a deal like "10 dollars, 12 magazines."
*Handmade soaps. I really like the ones with embedded bits of loofah. (I expect to be spending lots of time at Soapy Hollow, now that I know about it.)
*Books (especially fiction, cookbooks, and whatever looks good on the Remainders table at my favorite bookstore).
*Salty snacks.

Toilet paper. And food. I tried to stop buying food at one point but I just kept getting hungrier and hungrier. I thought it was one of those things like, once I got through the worst of it, I'd be free from cravings. And it was... for a bit. But then it kept coming back stronger and stronger and staying away less and less.

Almost Monthly:

Lip Gloss/Balms/Products

Bi-Monthly-ish:

I have a weakness for shoes, including flip flops and slippers, depending on the season. And underthings. And Candles. Must have candles in the house.

I thought the library had cured me of magazines, but because I am on a self-imposed library hiatus because of studying for an insurance exam, I've bought some magazines.

Books -- I'm clearing about 150 out of my library before I move. (Oh, did I mention? We got an apartment! In Brooklyn!)

Also, art supplies of any sort. Seriously, I see glitter and I'm like, "I might use that one day." Or magnets. Oil colors. I'll be like, "Oh, I only have half a bottle of turpenoid left. I need more, maybe, someday." And so I have a giant chest of drawers full of crayons, paints, pastels, brushes, papers, canvas, etc.

Heh. My answer is also books. I've started buying the books I want my (eventual) children to read, to compound the problem. And I am in no way angry at myself for giving away all of my children's and YA books in an "I'm an adult now" fit of pique age 15, and now having to buy all of those books again, no way at all stupid 15-year-old self, stupid waste of money, stupid stupid stupid....
