MetaChat is an informal place for MeFites to touch base and post, discuss and
chatter about topics that may not belong on MetaFilter. Questions? Check the FAQ. Please note: This is important.
Nearly two decades worth of data contained on IRC servers has effectively been lost. IRSeek wants to make sure that future conversations are properly indexed and and searchable. It’s a huge untapped knowledge-basecesspool.
I saw that a while ago and went searching on IRSeeK for "wendell" and "mefi" and found NOTHING from Slashnet, no #bunnies, no #mefi.
I did find one familiar name from #bunnies in another channel on another network...
Channel: wordpress
IRC Network: Freenode
Captured on: 08/04/2007 (Eurodate, so it's April 8th)
XXXXX(redacted): dude, mefi is so lame. it's like high school or anything else in life. you write a funny one-liner and people vote it up. you deliver a superbrillious synthesizing exegis and people scroll by.
We can have the channel be private- they're only indexing public channels. I thought it already was private, to be honest- but I checked tonight and it wasn't. So I moved it back to private. Any reason we shouldn't keep it private? #bunnies is, for all intents and purposes, a private channel- it's a function of Metachat (albeit an unofficial one), not an open discussion center. Given the private nature conversations can sometimes take, I think it best we keep the channel private.
Huh, wait- the channel is already listed as "secret". Is that better than "private"? Or, more importantly, is it enough to keep the channel out of "public" indexing? IRC confuses me.
it's weird, because in my lifetime i have shared/said things on irc that i certainly would not want repeated all over the web. like, when a room only has three or four people in it and you know all of them personally, which is something that used to happen quite a lot when i was a mod on bandchat. thank god that was never indexed. jesus.
