I'm shipping out to the Navy in three weeks! Long time reader, first time poster. I'm mostly excited but a little nervous too. I signed up back in May, so I've had plenty of time to prepare. I think I'm ready and I'm really excited to start a new chapter of my life.
Woohoo, congrats! When you "shipping out", are you going to boot camp, or are you being deployed?

I'm going to boot camp. I have a year and a half of school, so it'll be a while until I get deployed.

Are you training for a particular career in the Navy?

Hi concrete! Bye, concrete!

What made you decide on the Navy? Are you ready for the rigors of boot camp?

Congrats! We will all be thinking of you. We could send you lots of mail covered in pictures of bunnies, although I imagine that could probably warrant extra push-ups come mail time ;-)

Good luck. Take care.

We hardly knew ye. We look forward to more posts!

Essexjan, I was originally planning to become a Utilitiesman (plumbing/HVAC), but then I got a call from the Master Chief telling me that I qualified for nuclear training. That sounded better, so I switched over.

Iconomy, I mainly wanted to take on new challenges. For most of my life I've played it pretty safe, and I think I could be getting more out of life if I took a chance and put a little more into it. I think I'm as ready as I can be for boot camp. At the recruiting station, I've talked to a number of sailors who've come back on leave and they've told me that it mostly comes down to attitude and focus. I'm a little older than most of the other recruits (25), so I may have an advantage there.

Best of luck, concrete! Now that you've made a start, you can't stop posting, you know.

I just got out of the Navy. Are you going to be a NUKE? Your school seems long enough. Good luck. Boot Camp is a joke.

I hope you've practiced your shanties. Just in case.

If you are going to Great Lakes, Illinois, all I can say is poor bunny. This time of year you will be cold and wet.

BUT my son-in-law joined the Navy this summer and is now stationed in Norfolk. Who knows, one day you might run into him, my daughter, and the ever adorabiggle Grandbun(tm)!

The first thing you must learn is how to say it.

It's "Nu-cu-lar"

The Navy does not approve of chanteying!

But seriously - congratulations. The job training in the military is unparalleled, and it definitely does develop serious maturity, leadership and character. Hope you stay very safe and draw comfortable assignments.

You'll be fine at boot camp. We're not talking camp lejeune and the marines here.

Congratulations on your opportunity, however I don't think that concrete floats, so wear your lifejacket at all times. And here's hoping that you don't get fully deployed until there's a new Commander in Chief, you know?

Here is a nautical parting song. And hoping you do not meet a similar circumstance. . .

Wendell, there are remnants of a concrete ship in Cape May, New Jersey, so yeah, it actually floats. Good luck, concrete, and we'll look forward to more posts!

University engineering departments have concrete canoe design competitions all the time. You will have no problem floating. Best of luck!

Steel reinforced concrete was actually invented for making ships out of it, I think.

Concrete, best of the best to you. It will be a great adventure, for sure. Congrats!

My bro is in the Australian Navy. From what he talks about I would say - take care of your liver.

The Exxon-Mobil corporation thanks you for your time and devotion to our cause. Happy Holidays, have fun learning how to kill people, etc. etc.

Today I ran into somebody at Taco Del Mar who just got out of the Navy and was telling me about how he had to shovel snow when he was at Great Lakes.

Many thanks to all of you for your support and congratulations!

cmonkey, if you need to say that please take it to e-mail. Personal attacks are just not nice.

Actually my father and uncle were Navy NCO's and they used to say if you want to learn how to kill people join the Marines. If you want to learn a trade or skill join the Navy.

Best of luck concrete and stay in touch.

Also, if you need any advice I know there are some USN personnel active duty who are Mefites. Ask Metafilter might serve well.
