Thank you iconomy for the delicious sandwich.[More:]Thanks to iconomy's AskMe the other day (to which I am too lazy to link), I went out after work and bought a sandwich maker. I just finished off a turkey breast, brie, and honey mustard sandwich that was fantastic.

I lived with a now-ex-boyfriend a whole lotta years ago, and we had a snackster then. The new one brings back fond memories of other yummy sandwiches from years past. Who knew that a small kitchen appliance could evoke such memories?
Here's the link. Laziness makes me feel guilty.

No snackster here, but I've made perfectly awesome grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch for the past two days: Swiss, homemade pickled banana peppers, roasted (homegrown) poblano, and avocado. 'Twas a sandwich to swoon for.

That post inspired me to get my sandwich maker out of the pantry and dust it off. Not that I've used it yet but, ya know, baby steps.

I didn't know it, but we need a sammich maker.

Oh goody, they're not that expensive (Amazon). Now I need to find an off-line store.

When I make grilled cheese sandwiches, I just put them in the skillet and then put the dutch oven on top of them. (If you don't have a dutch oven, you could easily use something else heavy - another skillet, a kettle full of water, etc.) True, it doesn't cut them in half, but they do get a nice crunchy crust.

Not quite the same as crusty sammiches, but definitely in the same vein... (I mention this because I saw that there are some Jersey dwellers here) There a most rocking empanada place in Morristown called Raul's on Morris Avenue. Cheapy cheap, and they must have at least 30 different kinds.

And deborah- Look at places like Bed Bath and Beyond or Linens & Things for the sammich makers. Check your mail because they send 20% coupons in the mail ALL the time (esp. BB&B) and the stores will take them even if they're expired.

One thing that was pretty cool about that post was that it inspired so many people to go buy sandwich toasters. I wish I had thought to invest in some sandwich toaster stock before I posted.

I'm making mini calzones and salad for dinner tonight...that couldn't be easier. I use ricotta, mozzerella, romano, tomato sauce, spinach, and pepperoni (not usually all together) and put garlic butter on the outsides of the bread. Super easy.

I was thinking about that, too. I wonder if the sandwich maker industry experienced an appreciable leap in sales from your AskMe.

Oh, and deborah, I bought the Cuisinart one at the top of your Amazon list at Macy's.

What kind of bread, ico?

Also, don't you find cleaning it a pain? I have one, and it takes much longer to deal with, altogether, than just doing a frying pan kind of thing like bmarkey - so I often just skip it, unless I want it extra smooshy-nice.

Italian bread for the calzones, taz. I cut it into squares.

Clean it?? Whatever do you mean? What is this cleaning thing you speak of? I wipe it out with a paper towel after it cools down...that's the extent of the cleaning!

Thanks for the tips, dancinglamb (cool nickname!). We have Linens 'n' Things here and a couple more likely suspects ..er.. stores. Alas, no Macy's in BC, amro.

We do lots of sandwiches, but mostly the same things over and over again. I think one of the makers will expand our sammich repertoire nicely. It's going on the mister's xmas list although he doesn't know it. SURPRISE!

Do you think that snackster sandwiches would be good cold? I am thinking of making a turkey and cheese snackster for work and eating it at room temperature. Sounds like it would be good.
