IMO Planet Terror is a better movie than Death Proof, but the last twenty or so minutes of Death Proof are better than any twenty consecutive minutes of Planet Terror.
PLANET TERROR. DP is watching Tarantino masturbate to his own diaries about Tarantino fan fiction. Shit, if it can make Vanesa Ferlito's ass boring, it's a piece of crap. Until the car chase at the end. Then it's fun.
Death Proof. I didn't think so immediately after seeing it, but over time I've come to really think it's incredible.
By the way... Can anyone explain to me what's being alluded to in the 'two similar films slapped together' thing going on? The car being different in each half is the big indicator, but there are others as well. No one has been able to explain it to me so far.
Death Proof gets on my nerves because it has a bunch of women who all sound like middle aged men. That chatter worked well in Res Dogs but it just bugged me here. What crush-onastick said.
I think crush and arse summed it up nicely. Tarantino's booty fixation worked in his other films, but here you can almost hear the 'fapfapfap' coming from behind the camera. It bored me and creeped me out in turns. The car chase bits are good, but they don't redeem the endless, pointless, dragging wankfest in between. (Up 'til this film I was a Tarantino fan, too. *sigh*)
Planet Terror was a lot of fun, it also was much closer to the stated goal to make a fun B movie.
Death Proof was pretty tiresome. Kurt Russell was fantastic in it, but the rest of it was slow, boring, and repetitive. Quentin Tarantino shows an unearned love for his dialog in this film previously only exhibited by Kevin Smith at his worst.
Neither. Terror Planet was the more watchable overall of the two, but as more time passes since I watched them, the less interested I am in seeing either again.
The trailers! I almost made an FPP of them, but the available quality on YT is lacking.
Barring that, I actually liked Death Proof better, but it was indeed too long. At least the Tarantino flaw wasn't his acting. Boy do I hate it when he acts.
I saw an interview with Tarantino in which he complains that people never talk about how good an actor he is. At first I thought he was joking but he went on at great length about it and he was very serious.
