One of my most prized possessions is a cookbook from the 1890s published by a New England extension agency or farmer's co-op or one of those groups whose purpose was to help farmers' wives keep the family alive. It's got a dozen different recipes for root beer -- all made from roots! It also includes an entire chapter on how to care for an invalid.
