Maybe I'm getting tired of living in the past. Or maybe I'm just running out of unheard past to listen to. You all know what I like (emphatic melodies, ballsy vocals and meaty guitars & momentum I guess) and what I don't like. Gimme some new bands to hear that I'd actually like.
My darling niece decided to start a band less than a year ago, having decided there are limited opportunities as a professional dancer. Guess what? Graham Nash is producing a CD for her, with a month of studio time starting Dec 1!

There's only the two of them, keyboards and drums.

I just put together some music featuring A) instrumental arrangements of simple (ish) songs, and B) close-mic intimate vocals as opposed to shure stage mics.

Here's one batch (100M) I have another uploading.

Prolly not what you think you like, jon, but it's what I got online.

I've tried to push the Hives on you before, I think. Is that in the right neighborhood?

Was just listening to this fun little Silence of the Lambs-themed song.

You ever check out Starflyer 59, jon?

Maybe Murder By Death... although that might be too mellow/slow tempoed for you compared to your list.

I think that The Hold Steady have been mentioned in this context before. If you can't fall in love with "Your Little Hoodrat Friend", I don't know what to tell you.

Danko Jones?
The Black Keys?

I actually liked that one, bmarkey. And what I've heard of The Gossip, I kind of dug, too.

If you don't know the Drive-By Truckers, you should check them out. My favorite song of theirs:

Puttin' People On The Moon

and some other good ones:

Lookout Mountain (this song kicks ASS in concert)
Zip City
Let There Be Rock (my 2nd favorite DBT song)

So, you know how intimidating this post is, RIGHT?
(rolls eyes)

* Sweet Tangerine
* Unless It's Kicks - Okkervil River
*Put A Record On
*Just Impolite
*Flood Pt.1

(runs away, don't judge meeee)

Excellent. Some other, more psychedelic possibilities: Kinski’s “Boy, Was I Mad!” channels Black Sabbath and King Crimson simultaneously, while “The Bee and the Cracking Egg”, by Comets On Fire, goes all Blue Cheer/Pink Floyd psychotic.

You can never have enough of The Wildhearts in your life:

TV Tan
I Wanna Go Where The People Go
Caffeine Bomb
Just In Lust
Sick Of Drugs
Vanilla Radio
The Sweetest Song
The New Flesh

IMHO, they are the most underrated rock band the UK has had in the last 20 years or so. They have the songs (albums, singles containing well over 100 unreleased B sides), the image and also their fare share of the lifestyle. There's been multiple line ups, record labels, drug problems and more.

Not that you asked for it, but on the soul side there’s Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Nichole Willis & the Soul Investigators, and The Budos Band.

BP, you are the best. I needed some more DBT.

I cover one of their tunes, Goddamn Lonely Love... so cheers for that. Do you have anything else you can send my way? Their stuff is hard to get here.

Jon, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't like any of my recommendations... BUT:

I liked Raising Sand.

StickyCarpet, what is her band called?

Listen to my friend Jack's radio show on Saturday afternoons.

I do, chuck... tell you what, I'll send some more from work tomorrow, when I'm on the T1.

Yay DBT. If you like them, you'll like Lucero, The Dexateens (especially "Red Dust Rising"), and The Quadrajets.

And to move north of the Mason-Dixon Line, you might like Earl Greyhound and Vietnam.

I'm in the midst of a proggy-metal phase and listening to a lot of Neurosis, Isis, Russian Circles, God Is An Astronaut, Mouth of the Architect, and Red Sparowes. These bands will Piss You Off, ignore them.

Lucero is fucking great. If Springsteen was from Memphis, he'd sound like Lucero.

Chuckdarwin -- I have every single thing DBT has ever released, including Pat Hood and Jason Isbell solo stuff. Unfortunately, some of it is iTunes-DRM. I'd share it, if I knew how. Also, archive.org has an abundance of their live shows available. I've been following this band since they were in high school performing as Adam's House Cat, some twenty-odd years ago.

Saw DBT two weeks ago here in Birmingham AL doing their last "Dirt Beneath" show. They played for three hours, drank two entire fifths of Jack Daniels, and by the end the roadies were playing guitars, Cooley was dancing with his wife onstage, Pat Hood was channeling Iggy Pop, and they tore through Springsteen's "State Trooper" as an encore. Amazing. Best live band working today. And they're doing a New Years Eve show in Birmingham (maybe)! New record drops in January (maybe)! Woo hoo!

On the fuzzed-out garage-punk tip, I've been freaking out on Jay Reatard's new record. Check out "Blood Visions" on his Myspace page.

Run JMC - there's a great band from South Carolina called the Patty Hurst Shifters that are fantastique.

bmarkey, the Budos Band is amazing. If you like them, I'd also recommend T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo (available on eMusic).

StickyCarpet, what is her band called?

Huff This. They've played a few Williamsburg bars,
rooftop parties through bookshelf speakers.

Once they have a CD they'll probably play out more, because
they will have the possibility of selling $100 worth.

Here's the other set of 100M.

(Devotchka, Decemberists, Guillemots, Sparklehorse...)

I gotta put my two cents in for the Drive-By Truckers as well. Southern-rock on a punk budget. These guys are totally about feel and emotion. I have never heard a drummer have to drop so many beats to keep the rest of the band in time. They still have their share of train wrecks, and for bands like this, that's a good thing.

Try to hunt down their bootlegs.

I feel like I did this recently, suggesting The F*cking Eagles and Birthday Suits as examples of bands actively playing the kind of music you'd be inclined to like. I raise them again here.

This band broke up a while ago, but just the other day I was listening to Group Sounds by Rocket From the Crypt and thinking you might like that.

Also, I'll second the Gossip as good for jonmc in multiple ways.

Cherry Valence Rawk. Used to do a great cover of "Highway Star" live.
All Night More North Carolina rock.
Danny Pound Great music influenced by The Band.

Oh, it just came on, so if you've never gotten into the Distillers, do.
It's female lead heavy punk.
If you like punk at all, i say go.
If you like pop tunes, i'll think of something later.
