Who the hell is operating chainsaws at midnight? Rural duelling: it's serious business, I tells ya.
Opening scene: elizard dozing by her wood stove. Outside, in the dark, something is dripping. Beside it, a hunched shadow stirs and straightens, and, attracted by the warm light escaping her cheerfully curtained window, begins to move forward. Something. is. coming.
I live in an apt complex down the hill from a fairly major intersection, and I occasionally hear weird stuff.
Last night I heard two loud detonations, a fraction of a second apart, that sounded a lot like somebody firing a really large weapon -- like a 20mm, not just a shotgun or rifle (even a large one like a .50 BMG). There's construction going on at that intersection, but I fail to see anything that would entail commercial blasting. And they weren't working last night, AFAIK.
And this morning, about 7 or so, I heard this low, deep far-off KRUUUUUMP like an artillery round or a demo charge going off. No sirens, nothing on the news, dunno what gives. Somebody testing a hella bitchin' sound system, maybe?
Heh. The horror movie scenario never occurred to me. Great. Thanks. We don't have any streetlights or such, so it's darker than the inside of a coal miner's coffee cup out there, and all I was thinking was that either someone's really drunk or a tree fell on a power line.
Now that I think of it, I did hear the air raid siren go off about an hour or so before. I joke that they use the siren when they need more clippers at the grow op, but it's actually for summoning emergency responders who aren't on call. Probably a tree on a line or in a house or something. 'Course thanks to taz & LT, I'll be sleeping with the axe by the bed from now on.
I just liked the image of duelling lumberjacks, fighting with chainsaws for the hand of fair maiden. Or, you know, Lila the buxom barmaid.
