Someone fire-bombed the third floor of my office building. There was little fire damage, but lots of water from the sprinklers. We spent the day drying out our files.[More:]

About 10pm Monday night, someone threw something flammable/explodey through a third story window. The only thing that actually burned were some curtains. One of our shop guys went crazy with the fire extinguisher. That crap is hard to clean up.

My office is on the first floor and got filled with excess sprinkler water from the floors above. When I got to work, they had taken my office apart and moved it into the hallway. The receptionist threw away my mouse pad for no reason.

I did nothing today but help clean and re-organize things on the third floor.

Our server room is on the first floor too and was, in the words of our IT guy, 'a fucking mess'. Everything got wet. We might have our network back tomorrow, but it's unlikely.

I am exhausted.
oh jesus, what a mess! did they catch who did it?

I'm sorry about the mouse pad, but all things considered, it could have been worse. and yeah, the only thing worse than moving offices is cleaning up water damage in same.

It's gonna take the IT stuff awhile to get sorted. Computer / networky thingies really don't like taking a bath.

Ugh. I hope the backup routine was in fact routine. If you wanna make a friend, bring your IT guy a case of beer, and maybe a one-way plane ticket to Rio.

eep! That's scary. Was it some kind of political statement? (What's on the third floor?) Or just random?

youngergirl, that is terrible. Glad everyone is unharmed.

Good grief what a headache! The poor IT guy. They should just let fans run in there for at least 24 hours to dry it out, then fire it up & see what's what. That would be no fun chasing ghosts to find out where the hiccups are in that kind of situation.

It's a good thing it was at night, but then I guess that left lots of time for the sprinklers to sprinkle away.

Looks like a nice building, btw!

Glad to hear nobody was hurt. What a mess it must be. Sorry about the mouse pad, and it's always a bit of a shock when someone else moves your stuff! (Somehow you feel kinda violated because your nest has been invaded).

I bet you're going to get a good night's sleep after the grueling day. Nothing like physical labor to make you rest well (unless you overdid it).

That's completely crazy! Glad nobody got hurt. Sorry about your mouse pad. It's awfully cute. I do find the files drying quite beautiful somehow.

I found the drying files beautiful too - I had to take pictures. The building is really neat, especially the third floor. It's recently been redone and that's where our sales offices are.

The office is in a bad neighborhood, so crap happens frequently, but I think this is the worst. The firemen / cops / arson people just think it was random kids.

Holy crap! You're still in Chicago, aren't you? Where's your office?
posted by eamondaly 17 October | 12:00
Yup, still in Chicago. The office is in Humbolt Park - near Homan and Division.

Yeh, that neighbor just struggles and struggles. The brother-in-law's brother lives there.
